USS ''John King'' (DD-953/DDG-3) was a Charles F. Adams class destroyer, ''Charles F. Adams''-class guided missile armed destroyer in the United States Navy named for Medal of Honor recipient John King (Medal of Honor), John King. ''John King'' was laid down by the Bath Iron Works at Bath, Maine, Bath in Maine on 25 August 1958, launched on 30 January 1960 by Mrs. Paul J. Kilday, wife of Representative Kilday of Texas and commissioned on 4 February 1961; Comdr. Albert M. Sackett in command. John King (sailor)
John King (7 February 1865 – 20 May 1938) was an Irish people, Irish sailor in the United States Navy and one of only 19 in history to receive the Medal of Honor twice. Biography Born in the village of Currabee, near Ballinrobe (then in County Galway, now County Mayo), Ireland, King was allegedly involved in an incident at Cornmarket Ballinrobe, a result of which he was being sought by the R.I.C. (Royal Irish Constabulary). He walked 18 miles to Tuam County Galway and took the train, rather than going from Ballinrobe railway station, eventually arriving in then Queenstown, now Cobh County Cork. He then worked for his passage to the USA. King later enlisted in the Navy as a coal passer in Vermont on 20 July 1893. He served on board in the Caribbean during the Spanish–American War, and, in 1900, was transferred to for service during the Philippine–American War. Guantánamo Bay ( es, Bahía de Guantánamo) is a bay in Guantánamo Province at the southeastern end of Cuba. It is the largest harbor on the south side of the island and it is surrounded by steep hills which create an enclave that is cut off from its immediate hinterland. Bath is a city in Sagadahoc County, Maine, in the United States. The population was 8,766 at the 2020 census. It is the county seat of Sagadahoc County, which includes one city and 10 towns.
