USS Hebe (SP-966)
USS ''Hebe'' (SP-966) was a United States Navy patrol vessel in commission from 1917 to 1918. ''Hebe'' was built as a private motorboat of the same name in 1912 by George Bishop at Patchogue on Long Island, New York. On 19 May 1917, the U.S. Navy leased her from her owner, Edwin Thome of New York City, for use as a section patrol boat during World War I. She was commissioned at the New York Navy Yard in Brooklyn, New York, as USS ''Hebe'' (SP-966) on 1 August 1917. Assigned to the 3rd Naval District and based at Sayville, New York, ''Hebe'' patrolled the Great South Bay and Fire Island Fire Island is the large center island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the South Shore of Long Island, in the U.S. state of New York. The Great South Bay is a lagoon situated between Long Island and Fire Island, in the State of New York. It is about long and has an average depth of 4 feet 3 inches and is 20 feet at its deepest. Sayville, New York
Sayville is a hamlet and census-designated place in Suffolk County, New York, United States. Located on the South Shore of Long Island in the Township of Islip, the population of the CDP was 16,853 at the time of the 2010 census. History The earliest known inhabitants of Sayville were the Secatogue tribe of the Algonquian peoples. Sayville was founded by John Edwards (b. 1738) of East Hampton, New York.
