USA Shooting
USA Shooting (USAS), a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, was chartered by the United States Olympic Committee as the National Governing Body (NGB) for the sport of shooting in April 1995. The NRA had served as the NGB for one hundred years prior to this change in administration. It is USA Shooting's mission to prepare American athletes to win Olympic medals, promote the shooting sports throughout the U.S., and govern the conduct of international shooting in the country. The organization implements and manages development programs and sanctions events at the local, state, regional, and national levels. Origins Prior to 1979, a year-round U.S. Shooting Team did not exist. Athletes trained independently and met once a year to try out for major events such as the Olympics and World Championships. Lones Wesley Wigger Jr. (August 25, 1937, Great Falls, Montana – December 14, 2017, Colorado Springs, Colorado) was an American sports shooter. Wigger was a member of the United States at the Summer Olympics, United States Olympic team on three occasions, winning two Olympic Gold Medals. He also served in the U.S. Army as a lieutenant colonel. Wigger is often regarded as having been the greatest competitive rifle shooter ever to have taken aim for the United States. Margaret Thompson Murdock (born August 25, 1942) is a nurse and former United States Army officer most widely known for her success in international shooting competitions, including a silver medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics. Murdock is the first woman to win a medal in Shooting at the Summer Olympics and the first to win an individual open World Shooting Championship. In international competition Murdock set four individual world records and nine team world records. William Willard McMillan (January 29, 1929 – June 6, 2000) was a world-class American sport shooter. Competing in ISSF 25 meter rapid fire pistol, he won an Olympic gold medal in 1960, was part of the American winning team at the 1952 World Championships, and won several gold and silver medals at the Pan American Games between 1955 and 1979. Biography McMillan was born in Frostburg, Maryland. He attended Turtle Creek High School in Pennsylvania. His professional career began in the United States Marine Corps, with McMillan eventually reaching the rank of lieutenant colonel. Morris "Bud" Fisher (May 4, 1890 – May 23, 1968) was an American sport shooter and United States Marine Corps shooting instructor. He competed at the 1920 and 1924 Summer Olympics and won five gold medals in 300–800 m rifle events. He ended his Olympic career in 1924, as shooting was not part of the 1928 Games, and long-distance rifle events re-appeared only at the 1948 Olympics, when he had long retired both from active competitions and military service. Gary Lee Anderson (born October 8, 1939) is a former Nebraska state legislator and an American sport shooter. He was the only shooter to win two consecutive Olympic gold medals in the 300 m rifle event before it was discontinued. He also set six individual world records, and won seven world and 11 national titles, as well as 11 gold medals at the Pan-American Games.
