URIAN Awards
The Gawad Urian Awards are annual film awards in the Philippines held since 1977. It is given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino (MPP, "the Filipino Film Critics") and is currently regarded as the counterpart of the United States' New York Film Critics Circle. Establishment The MPP was formed by a host of scholars, film writers and other award-winning writers on May 1, 1976 as a critics' voice to rival the then-only award-giving body in the Philippines, which is its Oscars', the FAMAS Awards. Three years earlier, what would be the members of the MPP were included in the judges' roster of the FAMAS after a shocking 1972 Best Actress tie materialized between major star Boots Anson-Roa and then-rising star Vilma Santos. Filipino Cinema
The Cinema of the Philippines (Filipino language, Filipino: ''Pelikulang Pilipino'' or ''Sine Pilipino'') began with the introduction of the first film, moving pictures to the country on August 31, 1897, at the ''Salón de Pertierra'' in Manila. The following year, local scenes were shot on film for the first time by a Spaniard, Antonio Ramos, using the Auguste and Louis Lumière, Lumiere Cinematograph. While most early film director, filmmakers and film producers, producers in the country were mostly wealthy enterprising foreigners and expatriates, on September 12, 1919, ''Dalagang Bukid (Country Maiden)'', a movie based on a popular musical play, was the first movie made and shown by Filipino filmmaker José Nepomuceno. Richard Gomez
Richard Frank Icasiano Gomez (; born April 7, 1966) is a Filipino actor, television presenter and director, politician, and épée fencing, fencer. He has been serving as the House of Representatives of the Philippines, Representative of Leyte's 4th congressional district, Leyte's 4th district since 2022, and was mayor of Ormoc from 2016 to 2022. Gomez was a leading actor in the early 1990s, earning several awards and nominations. Eddie Romero
Edgar Sinco Romero, (July 7, 1924 – May 28, 2013), commonly known as Eddie Romero, was a Filipino film director, film producer and screenwriter. Early life Romero was born on July 7, 1924. His father was José E. Romero, the first Philippine Ambassador to the Court of St. James's. His mother was Pilar Guzman Sinco, a schoolteacher and the sister of University of the Philippines President Vicente G. ''Ganito Kami Noon... Paano Kayo Ngayon?'' () is a 1976 Philippine period drama film set in the end of Spanish colonization and the start of American colonization in the Philippines. Directed by Eddie Romero and written by Romero and Roy C. Iglesias, it stars Christopher de Leon and Gloria Diaz in the lead roles. The film was selected as the Philippine entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 49th Academy Awards, but was not accepted as a nominee. Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag
''In the Claws of Brightness'' (Filipino: ''Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag''), is a 1986 Tagalog language novel written by Filipino author Edgardo M. Reyes, originally serialized in '' Liwayway'' magazine from 1966 to 1967. The title ''In the Claws of Brightness'' is a word-for-word literal translation of the Tagalog title, which as a phrase effectively makes little sense in English. A more practical English translation would be ''At the Verge of Dawn''. The story became the basis for the award-winning Filipino film, ''Manila in the Claws of Light''. Summary Julio, a poor fisherman, goes to Manila to search for his betrothed named Ligaya. Lino Brocka
Catalino Ortiz Brocka (April 3, 1939 – May 22, 1991) was a Filipino film director. He is widely regarded as one of the most influential and significant filmmakers in the history of Philippine cinema. He co-founded the organization Concerned Artists of the Philippines (CAP), dedicated to helping artists address issues confronting the country, and the Free the Artist Movement. He was a member of the Coalition for the Restoration of Democracy. Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang (film)
''Weighed But Found Wanting'' (Filipino: ''Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang''; also known as ''Human Imperfections'' ) is a 1974 Filipino drama film directed by Lino Brocka. The films stars Christopher De Leon (in his debut role), Hilda Koronel, Lolita Rodriguez and Eddie Garcia. Considered one of Brocka's most important films, it won six awards (including Best Picture) at the 23rd FAMAS Awards in 1975. Plot The story begins with a flashback to the past of a woman called Kuala (Lolita RodrÃguez). Ishmael Bernal
Ishmael Bernal (30 September 1938 – 2 June 1996) was a Filipino filmmaker, stage and television director, actor and screenwriter. Noted for his melodramas, particularly with feminist and moral issues, he directed many landmark Filipino films such as '' Nunal sa Tubig'' (1976), ''City After Dark'' (1980), ''Relasyon'' (1982), ''Himala'' (1982), and ''Hinugot sa Langit'' (1985).
