UCC GAA
UCC is a football and hurling club associated with University College Cork. UCC teams play in the Cork Senior Football Championship and Cork Senior Hurling Championship as well as the two main third-level competitions namely the Sigerson Cup in football, the Fitzgibbon Cup in hurling and the Ashbourne Cup in camogie. They also compete against inter-county sides in the pre-season McGrath Cup (football) and Waterford Crystal Cup (hurling). The piratical skull and crossbones logo on the team shirt, which first appeared on the rugby team of what was then known as Queen’s College Cork (composed mostly of medical students, hence the bones) was appropriated in the mid-1910s by the GAA clubs, and in 1929 by the UCC hockey club. Mardyke (UCC)
The Mardyke, also referred as the Mardyke Sports Ground, is the sport and fitness facilities used by sports team representing University College Cork, the general student body, and members of the public. It is based in the Cork district of Mardyke. UCC acquired the grounds in 1911, and rented the main pitch to rugby, soccer, hockey and hurling clubs in the city for a 15% cut of the gate receipts. Outdoors, there are floodlit grass and all-weather pitches, used for soccer, rugby, Gaelic games, and hockey. Kayakers train in the adjacent North channel of the River Lee. There is a tartan track for athletics, where the Cork City Sports are held annually. The most notable performance came in the hammer throw on 3 July 1984, when Yuriy Sedykh and Sergey Litvinov broke the world record six times in one evening. Pat Heffernan
Pat Heffernan (born 2 January 1970 in Kilfinane, County Limerick, Ireland) is an Irish hurling selector and former player. He is a former selector with the Limerick senior hurling team. He is currently manager of Mullinahone Senior Hurling team and teaches Geography at the Patrician Academy Mallow Secondary School. An effective forward, Heffernan enjoyed a reasonably successful playing career at club level with Blackrock, UCC and Mallow and at inter-county level with Limerick. He was a key member of the latter team during the 1990s and collected one Munster title. In retirement from playing Heffernan has become involved in team management. He gained early experience at club level with Kilmallock, Murroe-Boher, Bride Rovers and with his own Blackrock club. He took charge of the Kerry senior hurling team between 2007 and 2008, while later serving as a selector with the Limerick intermediate team. Munster Senior Club Football Championship
The Munster Senior Club Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the AIB Munster GAA Football Senior Club Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition for the champion clubs of each county. It has been organised by the Munster Council of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1964. The series of games are played during the autumn and winter months with the final usually being played in late November. The prize for the winning team is the O'Connor Cup. The championship has always been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the championship. The Munster Championship is an integral part of the wider All-Ireland Senior Club Football Championship. The winners of the Munster final join the champions of Connacht, Leinster and Ulster in the semi-finals of the All-Ireland Senior Club Championship. 1970 Cork Senior Hurling Championship
The 1970 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 82nd staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The championship began on 19 April 1970 and ended on 22 November 1970. Glen Rovers entered the championship as the defending champions, however, they were defeated by University College Cork in the quarter-final. The final was played on 22 November 1970 at the Athletic Grounds in Cork, between University College Cork and Muskerry, in what was their first ever meeting in a final. University College Cork won the match by 2-12 to 0-15 to claim their second championship title overall and a first title in seven years. 1963 Cork Senior Hurling Championship
The 1963 Cork Senior Hurling Championship was the 75th staging of the Cork Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Cork County Board in 1887. The draw for the opening round fixtures took place at the Cork Convention on 27 January 1963. The championship began on 7 April 1963 and ended on 29 September 1963. Glen Rovers were the defending champions, however, they were defeated by University College Cork in the first round. On 29 September 1963, University College Cork won the championship following a 4-17 to 5-6 defeat of Blackrock in the final. This was their first championship title. Mossie Finn from the St. Finbarr's club was the championship's top scorer with 4-15. HEC O'Connor Cup
The HEC O'Connor Cup, also referred to as the Michael O'Connor Cup, is the senior Ladies' Gaelic football intervarsity cup competition. It features teams representing universities and institutes of technology from the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It is organised by the Higher Education Colleges committee of the Ladies' Gaelic Football Association. Mary Immaculate College won the inaugural competition in 1987. University of Limerick is the competitions most successful team. Since 2018 the O'Connor Cup has been sponsored by Gourmet Food Parlour. It was previously sponsored by the ''Irish Examiner''. During the 2010s the O'Connor Cup final has been broadcast live by TG4 and/or YouTube. William Egan (hurler)
William Egan (born 16 June 1990) is an Irish hurler who plays for Duhallow Junior Championship club Kilbrin. He currently plays as a centre-back, but can also be deployed as a wing-back. Egan is a former member of the Cork senior hurling team. Playing career Club Egan plays his club hurling and Gaelic football with Kilbrin and has enjoyed some success. As a member of the club's hurling team he has won numerous junior championship and under-21 championship medals at divisional level. In 2010 Egan won a junior "B" football championship medal with the club following a one-point defeat of Charleville. University During his tenure at University College Cork, Egan played a key role for the university's various hurling teams. John Grainger
John Grainger (1830, Belfast– 1891) was an Irish cleric and antiquarian. Grainger was educated at Belfast Academy and Trinity College, Dublin. After gaining a Doctorate of Divinity he became Rector of Broughshane, County Antrim. He was an indiscriminating collector, who filled his house with a mass of often unlabelled specimens including stuffed birds, shells, insects, coins, minerals, a dolmen, weapons from New Zealand, and archaeological finds. According to Robert Lloyd Praeger his collection of Irish stone tools was ‘’especially valuable as a study in the gentle art of forgery’’. Tommy Walsh (hurler, Born 1983)
Thomas Walsh (born 5 May 1983) is an Irish hurler who played as a right wing-back at senior level for the Kilkenny county team. Born in Tullaroan, County Kilkenny, Walsh first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St Kieran's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He joined the senior panel during the 2002 championship. Walsh became a regular member of the starting fifteen the following year, and won nine All-Ireland medals (two as a non-playing substitute), ten Leinster medals and seven National League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. At international level Walsh has played for the composite rules shinty-hurling team, captaining his country to the title in 2009. Nicky English
Nicholas J. "Nicky" English (born 20 October 1962) is an Irish former hurler who played as a full-forward at senior level for the Tipperary county team. Born in Cullen, County Tipperary, English first played competitive Gaelic games during his schooling at the Abbey CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Tipperary minor teams as a dual player, before later joining the under-21 sides. He made his senior debut during the 1982 championship. English went on to play a key part for almost fifteen years, and won two All-Ireland medals, five Munster medals and two National Hurling League medals.
