U6 (Vienna U-Bahn)
Line U6 is a line on the Vienna U-Bahn. It currently has 24 stations and runs 17.3 km from to . It is connected to at , at and at . The first section of the line opened in 1989, and was completed at its present length in 1996. It is the only metro line in the DACH countries which is not operated by third rail but by overhead wire; this is because the centre portion of the line is an elevated part of the former Vienna Stadtbahn system, which was operated by overhead wire. When the line was transformed to rapid transit standards, it was considered too expensive to rebuild the elevated portion for high-floor trains and third rail, as it was done with the U4. Light Metro
A medium-capacity system (MCS), also known as light rapid transit or light metro, is a rail transport system with a capacity greater than light rail, but less than typical heavy-rail rapid transit. MCS’s trains are usually 1-4 cars, or 1 light rail vehicle (LRV). Most medium-capacity rail systems are automated or use light rail type vehicles. Light rail is considered high capacity as trains use 2-4 LRVs. Since ridership determines the scale of a rapid transit system, statistical modeling allows planners to size the rail system for the needs of the area. Vienna Stadtbahn
The Vienna Stadtbahn (german: Wiener Stadtbahn) was a rail-based public transportation system operated under this name from 1898 until 1989. Today, the Vienna U-Bahn lines U4 and U6 and the Vienna S-Bahn (commuter rail) run on its former lines. The Stadtbahn is one of Vienna's better-known examples of early Art Nouveau architecture.
