''Utter Madness'' is a greatest hits album by the British pop band Madness, released on their own Zarjazz label through Virgin Records on 24 November 1986 shortly after the group's original split. It picks up from where the band's first greatest hits album ''Complete Madness'' left off, running from "Driving in My Car" (the first single after ''Complete Madness'''s release) to the last Madness single before their split, " (Waiting For) The Ghost Train". Content As with ''Complete Madness'', the compilation includes a couple of album tracks that were never released as singles, namely "I'll Compete" and "Victoria Gardens". "Yesterday's Men" is a song by the English ska and pop band Madness, released on 19 August 1985 as the lead single from their sixth studio album '' Mad Not Mad'' (1985). It was written by Graham McPherson and Chris Foreman, and produced by Clive Langer and Alan Winstanley. The song spent 7 weeks on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at number 18. The song was edited for release as a single, the album version being some thirty seconds longer. A music video was filmed to promote the single, directed by Chris Gabrin. Critical reception Upon its release as a single, Paul Bursche of ''Number One'' described "Yesterday's Men" as "a grim portrait of a land without hope" and "a real grower that finally emerges into one of the best songs the group have ever done". Graham McPherson (born 13 January 1961), known primarily by his stage name Suggs, is an English singer-songwriter, musician, radio personality and actor from Hastings, England. In a music career spanning 40 years, he came to prominence in the late 1970s as the lead singer of the ska band Madness, which released fifteen singles that entered the top 10 charts in the United Kingdom during the 1970s, 1980s and the 1990s, including " My Girl", "Baggy Trousers", "Embarrassment", " It Must Be Love", "House of Fun", "Driving in My Car", " Our House", " Wings of a Dove" and "Lovestruck". It was released in 1983 as a stand-alone single and later in 1984 it was included on the American version of their studio album '' Keep Moving''. Michael Barson (born 21 April 1958) is a Scottish-born multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and composer. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Barson came to prominence in the late 1970s as the keyboard player for the band Madness (band), Madness. Early years Barson was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. ''Record Mirror'' was a British weekly music newspaper between 1954 and 1991 for pop fans and record collectors. Launched two years after the ''NME'', it never attained the circulation of its rival. The first UK album chart was published in ''Record Mirror'' in 1956, and during the 1980s it was the only consumer music paper to carry the official UK singles and UK albums charts used by the BBC for Radio 1 and ''Top of the Pops'', as well as the US ''Billboard'' charts.
