The Utica City School District is a public school district coterminous with the city of Utica, New York, United States. It is a highly diverse urban district, having 69% racial minority students and 17% students who are English language learners in 2017. It is part of Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES and the Conference of Big 5 School Districts, a conference of the largest urban school districts in New York State. Mohawk Valley
The Mohawk Valley region of the U.S. state of New York is the area surrounding the Mohawk River, sandwiched between the Adirondack Mountains and Catskill Mountains, northwest of the Capital District. Notre Dame Junior Senior High School (Utica, New York)
Notre Dame Junior Senior High School (NDJSHS) is a co-ed Catholic high school in Utica, New York. It is part of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse. Notre Dame was established in 1959 by the Xaverian Brothers. The land that the school was built on was the former location of a military hospital. Initially, the school owned the land currently occupied by the Utica Business Park, but sold most of it to the city, creating its current boundaries. Originally just a high school, in 1994 both local Catholic junior high schools merged with Notre Dame and moved to the high school building. Utica Free Academy
Utica Free Academy, whose predecessor, Utica Academy, opened in 1814, was a high school in Utica, New York, which operated from 1840 until 1990, when it was consolidated with Thomas R. Proctor High School. The combined entity operated briefly at UFA's original facility under the name Utica Senior Academy, but by 1993 had been reverted to the Proctor name and heritage. Works Progress Administration
The Works Progress Administration (WPA; renamed in 1939 as the Work Projects Administration) was an American New Deal agency that employed millions of jobseekers (mostly men who were not formally educated) to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads. It was set up on May 6, 1935, by presidential order, as a key part of the Second New Deal. The WPA's first appropriation in 1935 was $4.9 billion (about $15 per person in the U.S., around 6.7 percent of the 1935 GDP). The General Educational Development (GED) tests are a group of four subject tests which, when passed, provide certification that the test taker has United States or Canadian high school-level academic skills. It is an alternative to the US high school diploma, as is HiSET. The GED Testing Service website currently does not refer to the test as anything but "GED".
