Uruguay Tourné
Uruguay Tourné del Campo (13 May 1929 – 30 November 2022) was a Uruguayan politician. Background and early career In his youth, Tourné was an activist for the National Party (Uruguay). Tourné was an uncle to politician Daisy Tourné who served as Interior Minister. Deputy and Senator Tourné was repeatedly elected as Deputy for Montevideo for the years 1963 to 1977, although was obliged to step down prior to the completion of his mandate. Tourné later served as a Senator from 1985 to 1989. Later political activity In later years he identified with the National Party (Uruguay)'s Herrerismo grouping. He was a supporter of Jorge Larrañaga. Personal life and death Tourné died on 30 November 2022, at the age of 93. The National Party ( es, Partido Nacional, PN), also known as the White Party ( es, Partido Blanco), is a major political party in Uruguay. It was founded in 1836 by Manuel Oribe, making it the country's oldest active political party, and together with the Colorado Party, its origin dates back to the time of the creation of the Uruguayan State. Positioned on the centre-right of the political spectrum, the National Party is ideologically liberal, nationalist, Pan-Americanist and humanist. Daisy Tourné
Daisy Tourné (17 March 1951 – 19 November 2022) was a Uruguayan politician, teacher, and syndicalist. Early life and career Daisy Tourné was the daughter of María Obdulia Valdez and Pedro César Tourné, she was a niece to former Senator Uruguay Tourné, of the conservative National Party. Tourné was an elementary school teacher and a social psychologist by profession. Tourné aligned politically with the Frente Amplio movement, which was in government office between 2005 and 2020. Between 1995 and 2007 Tourné served as a deputy for Montevideo, prior to taking up ministerial office. Ministerial office Between 2007 and June 2009 she served as Interior Minister in the government of President Tabaré Vázquez, the first woman to have been appointed to that post. Jorge Washington Larrañaga Fraga (8 August 1956 – 22 May 2021) was an Uruguayan politician of the National Party (PN) who was Minister of the Interior from 1 March 2020 until his death. He also previously served as Intendant of Paysandú from 1990 to 1999, as well as a Senator between 2000 and 2020. Background Larrañaga grew up and attended school in Paysandú. He studied law at the Universidad de la República and practiced until 1990, specializing in civil and labour law. He took a series of administrative posts in the National Party, culminating in his presidency of the Party's departmental commission in Paysandú (1985–1989). The politics of Uruguay abide by a presidential representative democratic republic, under which the President of Uruguay is both the head of state and the head of government, as well as a multiform party system. The president exercises executive power and legislative power and is vested in the two chambers of the General Assembly of Uruguay. The Judiciary is independent from the executive and legislature. The Colorado and National parties have been locked in a power struggle, with the predominance of the Colorado party throughout most of Uruguay's history.
