Ursus rail crash (''Polish:'' ''Katastrofa kolejowa w Ursusie'') was a major accident, which occurred at 6:20 a.m. on 20 August 1990 near the Warszawa Ursus railway station on the western part of Polish capital in which 16 people died and 43 were injured. Accident At 6:20 am, InterExpress no. 41008 ''Silesia '' from Praha hl.n. to Warszawa Wschodnia ran into the last carriage of train no. 6114 from Szklarska Poręba to Warszawa Wschodnia; there was a mist with very low visibility. The train from Szklarska was travelling at 12 mph (17 km/h) while InterExpress ''Silesia'' (with Tadeusz Mościcki as its driver) was travelling at nearly 75 mph (120 km/h). Ursus, Warsaw
Ursus is a district ''(dzielnica)'' of Warsaw, one of the 18 such units into which the city is divided. Between 1952 and 1977 it was a separate city. Until 1954 it was known as ''Czechowice''. History In the area that is today Ursus, there were three villages in the 14th century: Czechowice, Skorosze and Szamoty (later called Gołąbki). Industrialisation in the 20th century contributed to developing these villages. Skorosze became the seat of the municipality, and in the early 1920s the Szamoty area's Zakłady Mechaniczne "Ursus" ( en, Ursus Industrial Plants) (makers of agricultural machinery) were built. Czechowice became a housing estate due to it being in the vicinity of factories. In the 1939, before World War II, it had 7000 inhabitants. Automatic block signaling (ABS), spelled automatic block signalling or called track circuit block (TCB ) in the UK, is a railroad communications system that consists of a series of signals that divide a railway line into a series of sections, called ''blocks''. Warszawa Ursus railway station is a railway station in the Ursus district of Warsaw, Poland. The station is served by Koleje Mazowieckie, who run trains from Skierniewice to Warszawa Wschodnia, and Szybka Kolej Miejska, who run trains from Pruszków PKP to Otwock. Telescoping (railway)
In a railway accident, telescoping occurs when the underframe of one vehicle overrides that of another, and smashes through the second vehicle's body. The term is derived from the resulting appearance of the two vehicle bodies: the body of one vehicle may appear to be slid inside the other like the tubes of a collapsible telescope – the body sides, roof and underframe of the latter vehicle being forced apart from each other. Telescoping often results in heavy fatalities if the cars telescoped are fully occupied. The car riding on top will often be destroyed by the structure of the car below, crushing those on board (although the physics of the incident may reverse the cars' roles).
