Uralla Railway Station
Uralla railway station is a heritage register, heritage-listed railway station located on the Main Northern railway line, Main Northern line in the Uralla Shire, New South Wales, Australia. It serves the town of Uralla, and opened on 2 August 1882 when the line was extended from Kootingal railway station, Kootingal. It was the terminus of the line until it was extended to Armidale railway station, Armidale on 3 February 1883. It is also known as Uralla Railway Station group. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Services Uralla station is served by NSW TrainLink's daily ''Northern Tablelands Express, Northern Tablelands New South Wales Xplorer, Xplorer'' service operating between Armidale railway station, Armidale and Central railway station, Sydney, Sydney. The town is located at the intersection of the New England Highway and Thunderbolts Way, north of Sydney and about south west of the city of Armidale. At the , the township of Uralla had a population of 2,388 people,. At more than above sea level, Uralla's high altitude makes for cool to cold winters and mild summers. Boasting a rich history, Uralla has more than 50 buildings and sites of heritage significance which can be easily explored on foot or by vehicle. The community collectively bought and restored McCrossins Mill in the 1980s and 1990s, and this is now a multi-award-winning museum, gallery and function centre still run by volunteers. This is also the starting point for the heritage walk. History The word "Uralla" was taken by the European squatters from the language of the local Aniwan tribe of Indigenous Australians. The New South Wales State Heritage Register, also known as NSW State Heritage Register, is a heritage list of places in the state of New South Wales, Australia, that are protected by New South Wales legislation, generally covered by the Heritage Act 1977 and its 2010 amendments. The register is administered by the Heritage Council of NSW via Heritage NSW, a division of the Government of New South Wales Department of Planning and Environment. The register was created in 1999 and includes items protected by heritage schedules that relate to the State, and to regional and to local environmental plans.
