Upware North Pit
Upware North Pit is a biological Site of Special Scientific Interest north-west of Wicken in Cambridgeshire. This site has several flooded pits with areas of willow and hawthorn. It is one of only two British sites which has water germander, a plant listed in the ''British Red Data Books'' of threatened species. Other unusual aquatic plants are great water dock and greater pond sedge. A Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) in Great Britain or an Area of Special Scientific Interest (ASSI) in the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland is a conservation designation denoting a protected area in the United Kingdom and Isle of Man. Wicken, Cambridgeshire
Wicken is a small village on the edge of The Fens near Soham in East Cambridgeshire, ten miles north east of Cambridge and five miles south of Ely. It is the site of Wicken Fen National Nature Reserve. Geography Wicken parish consists principally of fenland covering in eastern Cambridgeshire. Its western border largely follows the course of the River Cam, and its southern border separating it from Burwell follows the winding Wicken Lode, which flows into Reach Lode just before the latter meets the Cam. A fenland waterway forms its eastern border with Soham parish. Since at least the 10th century the parish has also contained the hamlet of Upware in its isolated south-west corner on the Cam. ''Carex riparia'', the greater pond sedge, is a species of sedge found across Europe and Asia. It grows in a variety of wet habitats, and can be a dominant species in some swamps. It is Britain's largest ''Carex'', growing up to tall, with glaucous leaves up to long. The Fen Rivers Way is a long distance footpath that spans a distance of . It runs between the City of Cambridge and the town of King's Lynn in West Norfolk. It follows the course of the River Cam and River Great Ouse across the Fenland landscape into the Wash. It provides a small part of European Long Distance Path E2 which goes from Nice to Galway. Upware
Upware is a village in Wicken civil parish, part of East Cambridgeshire, England, lying on the east bank of the River Cam. History Situated in the isolated south-west corner of the parish of Wicken, the hamlet of Upware is believed to have existed, and indeed been known by its present name, since at least the 10th century. Its situation on a navigable stretch of the River Cam would have been essential to its survival, and its name probably derives from a fishing weir on the river at the time. It was recorded as inhabited in both the 13th and 15th centuries, and there were 10 houses in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Analysis of an earthwork near the river found a brick base surrounded by a 40-foot moat and linked to a former wharf on the Cam. It is believed to be a Civil War fortification from the 1640s.
