Uptown, Minneapolis
Uptown is a commercial district in southwestern Minneapolis in the U.S. state of Minnesota, that is centered at the intersection of Hennepin Avenue and West Lake Street. It has traditionally spanned the corners of four neighborhoods, Lowry Hill East, East Bde Maka Ska, South Uptown and East Isles neighborhoods, which are all within the Calhoun Isles community. Historically, the boundaries of Uptown are Bde Maka Ska (formerly Lake Calhoun) to the west, Dupont Avenue to the east, 31st Street to the south, and 28th Street to the north; though these borders often vary. Uptown is a popular destination for retail, nightlife, and cultural events, and the district was famously written about by recording artist Prince. Seven Points (Minnesota)
Seven Points is an indoor shopping mall opened on February 15, 1984, at the southeast corner of Hennepin Avenue and West Lake Street (Minneapolis), Lake Street, the main intersection of the Uptown, Minneapolis, Uptown district of Minneapolis, Minnesota. The building was previously known as Calhoun Square until October 2020. History The atrium-style indoor mall was created in an early 1980s style of redevelopment by local developer Ray Harris from a series of older buildings, including the Geanakoplos Building (1917). In the early stages, neighborhood activists opposed to the project started the "Dump Updale" campaign. Bde Maka Ska
Bde Maka Ska (, previously named Lake Calhoun, its former official designation) is the largest lake in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, and part of the city's Chain of Lakes. Surrounded by city park land and circled by bike and walking trails, it is popular for many outdoor activities. The lake has an area of and a maximum depth of . Lake and surrounding area The lake is part of the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway, connecting with Lake of the Isles on the northeast, Cedar Lake and Brownie Lake on the northwest, and Lake Harriet on the south. Abdallah Chocolates
Abdallah Candies is a fifth-generation, family-owned chocolatier and confectionery in Apple Valley, Minnesota. It was established as the Calhoun Candy Depot in Minneapolis in 1909 by Lebanese immigrant Albert Abdallah and his wife of Swedish descent, Helen Trovall. The company was renamed Abdallah Candy Company in 1916. History In the early years, Albert made candy in a copper kettle over an open flame, working from recipes purchased from a local salesman. His recipes for caramels, toffee, truffles and assorted chocolates are still used by the company today. In the 1930s, in addition to candy and ice cream, the store featured a 200-seat restaurant. In February 1935, Abdallah's was forced into bankruptcy and closed due to the Great Depression. After two years, Albert paid back his creditors and opened a smaller store a few blocks from the original, focusing on candy and ice cream. ''Crystal Ball'' is a box set by American recording artist Prince. It includes ''Crystal Ball'', the artist's 21st studio album, which is a three-disc set of "previously bootlegged" material, together with a fourth disc, ''The Truth'', the twenty-first studio album by Prince. The box set was initially only available through direct orders by phone and internet. The direct order edition included a fifth disc, an instrumental studio album by The NPG Orchestra titled ''Kamasutra''. Uptown (Prince Song)
"Uptown" is the lead single from Prince's third album, ''Dirty Mind''. Beginning with a lone drum intro, the track explodes into the keyboards of the chorus. The verses feature a more prominent funk guitar. The song breaks down to a more instrumental section toward the end that mainly consists of guitar, bass and drums with an occasional keyboard riff. The minimalist style of the song is representative of most of the ''Dirty Mind'' album. The song addresses the Uptown neighborhood of Minneapolis that was the city's hang-out spot for artists. Background The song addresses prejudices and racism, referring to "Uptown" as a metaphor for an ideal place that is free of such things. White flight or white exodus is the sudden or gradual large-scale migration of white people from areas becoming more racially or ethnoculturally diverse. Starting in the 1950s and 1960s, the terms became popular in the United States.
