Arthur Upson
Arthur Wheelock Upson (January 10, 1877 – August 14, 1908) was an American poet. Early life He was born in Camden, New York, on January 10, 1877, to Spencer Johnson Upson and Julia Claflin. His family moved from New York to Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1894, with Upson entering the University of Minnesota with the class of 1898. There, he served as editor of the campus newspaper, ''the Minnesota Daily''. While a student at University of Minnesota, he was a member of the Beta Pi chapter of Beta Theta Pi. Unable to complete the requirements for a degree due to his ill health, he was later awarded a degree in 1906 due to his literary success, becoming an instructor there the same year. Upson reworked the song "Hail! Minnesota", at the request of the school's president Cyrus Northrop, the song later becoming the state song of Minnesota and the ''alma mater'' of the University of Minnesota. Charles Upson
Charles Upson (March 19, 1821 – September 5, 1885) was a politician from the U.S. state of Michigan. Upson was born in Southington, Connecticut, to Lydia (Webster) Upson (1781–1861) and Asahel Upson (1783–1867). He attended the district and select schools of Southington and later taught school in Farmington from 1840 to 1842. He married Sophia Upham on August 4, 1852. Upson studied law at the Yale Law School in 1844 and moved to Constantine, Michigan the following year. He taught school in 1846 and 1847 and became deputy county clerk of St. Joseph County in 1847. He was admitted to the bar in 1847 and commenced practice in Kalamazoo. He served as county clerk from 1848 to 1849 and prosecuting attorney from 1852 to 1854. Donna Marie Upson (born 1978) is a Canadian white supremacist who ran for the office of mayor of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada in the 2003 municipal election. In July 2000, Upson, known within the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) as "Baby Hitler", with several previous convictions for hate-related offences, was sentenced to two years in prison for threatening the pastor of a predominantly black Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, congregation. The judge stated that Upson had come to Nova Scotia on a mission to rid churches of blacks, and she was described as a "card-carrying member of the KKK, Aryan Nations, and the Nationalist Party". Matthew James Upson (born 18 April 1979) is an English former professional footballer who played as a centre back. Upson played for England at full international level including at the 2010 World Cup. Maxwell Mayhew Upson was a member of the Cornell University Board of Trustees for over 35 years. Upson graduated in 1899 from Cornell with a bachelor's degree in engineering. Upson was elected to the Sphinx Head Society as a senior. He was awarded the Edward Longstreth Medal from the Franklin Institute in 1940. Ralph Hazlett Upson (June 21, 1888 – August 13, 1968) was a pioneer in the aviation field, holding Airship Pilot's Certificate #7, Balloon Pilot's Certificate #48 and Pilot's License #10290. Upson designed the world's only all-metal stressed-skin airship and contributed to aerospace technology research. He won the 1913 International Balloon Race (with Ralph Preston). He was the second individual to win the Wright Brothers Medal in 1929. Stephen Upson
Stephen Upson (1785 – August 24, 1824) was an American politician and lawyer. Upson was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and graduated from Yale College in 1804. He then studied law at the Litchfield Law School. In 1807, Upson, moved to Hoover, Virginia, and later to Lexington, Georgia, in order to study law under William H. Crawford. In 1812, Upson married Hannah Cummins. He represented Oglethorpe County, Georgia, in the Georgia General Assembly beginning in 1820 and continued in that role until his death. Upson was also the head of the Georgia bar. Upson died in 1824 and was buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery in Lexington.
