Upazila
An ''upazila'' ( bn, উপজেলা, upajēlā, lit=sub-district pronounced: ), formerly called ''thana'', is an administrative division in Bangladesh, functioning as a sub-unit of a district. It can be seen as an analogous to a county or a borough of Western countries. Rural upazilas are further administratively divided into union council areas (union parishads). Bangladesh has 495 upazilas. The upazilas are the second lowest tier of regional administration in Bangladesh. The administrative structure consists of divisions (8), districts (64), upazilas (495) and union parishads (UPs). This system of devolution was introduced by the former military ruler and president of Bangladesh, Lt-Gen Hossain Muhammad Ershad, in an attempt to strengthen local government. Shantiganj Upazila
Shantiganj ( bn, শান্তিগঞ্জ, Shantigônj), formerly known as South Sunamganj or Dakshin Sunamganj ( bn, দক্ষিণ সুনামগঞ্জ), is an upazila of the Sunamganj District in Sylhet Division, Bangladesh. Geography Shantiganj is located in between 24°49' and 25°10' north latitudes and in between 91°14' and 91°27' east longitudes. It has a total area of . Kalai ( bn, কালাই) is an upazila of Joypurhat District in the Division of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Geography Kalai is located at . It has 23504 households and total area 166.3 km2. Demographics As of the 1991 Bangladesh census, Kalai has a population of 114183. Males constitute 50.86% of the population, and females 49.14%. This Upazila's eighteen up population is 60864. Joypurhat Sadar ( bn, জয়পুরহাট সদর) is an upazila of Joypurhat District in the Division of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Geography Joypurhat Sadar is located at . It has 45484 households and total area 238.54 km2. Akkelpur ( bn, আক্কেলপুর) is an upazila of Joypurhat District in the division of Rajshahi, Bangladesh. Geography Akkelpur is located at , with a total area of 139.47 km2. Joypurhat ( bn, জয়পুরহাট জেলা, ''Joypurhat Jela'', also ''Joypurhat Zila'') is a district in the northern part of Bangladesh. It is one of the 8 districts of Rajshahi Division. Union council ( bn, ইউনিয়ন পরিষদ, translit=iūniyan pariṣad, translit-std=IAST), also known as union parishad, rural council, rural union and simply union, is the smallest rural administrative and local government unit in Bangladesh. Each union council is made up of nine wards. Usually one village is designated as a ward. There are 4,562 unions in Bangladesh. A union council consists of a chairman and twelve members including three members exclusively reserved for women. Union councils are formed under the ''Local Government (Union Parishads) Act, 2009''. Dasar Upazila
Dasar Upazila is an upazila of Madaripur district in the Division of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Dasar Upazila consists of five unions of Baligram, Kazibakai, Gopalpur, Dasar and Nabagram. The area of this upazila is 76.8 km2. According to the 2011 census, the population of Dasar is 71,494. The Palrodi river flows over Dasar Upazila. History A police investigation centre was set up in Dasar on February 2, 2012. Later, the Dasar Thana (police station) was formed on March 2, 2013, with five unions of Kalkini Upazila. Shortly thereafter, the local administration proposed to convert Dasar into upazila. At the meeting of the National Implementation Committee on Administrative Restructuring (NICAR) on November 20, 2017, the Dasar Thana (police station) was supposed to be upgraded to upazila but it was rejected and asked to conduct a further examination. Sunamganj District
Sunamganj ( bn, সুনামগঞ্জ) is a district located in north-eastern Bangladesh within the Sylhet Division. History In the ancient period, Sunamganj was part of the Laur Kingdom. After the conquest of Sylhet (Kingdom of Gauiurh) in 1303 by Muslims under the spiritual guidance of Shah Jalal, Shah Kamal Quhafah established a capital in Shaharpara with the aid of his twelve disciples and his second son, Shah Muazzamuddin Qureshi, who also maintained a second sub-administration office at Nizgaon on the bank of the river Surma, present day Shologhar (there is now Shologhar Masjid and madrasa) in Sunamganj town, which was administered by one of his descendants.
