''Up'' is a 1984 American short film directed by Mike Hoover and Tim Huntley. In 1985, it won an Academy Awards, Oscar for Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film, Best Short Subject at the 57th Academy Awards. The film depicts a man who sets a hawk free, then tries to find it in the wild on his hang glider. Mike Hoover
Mike Hoover is an American mountaineer, rock climber and cinematographer. He first became known for an Academy Awards, Academy Award-nominated documentary short, ''Solo'', in which he climbed a fictional mountain solo. His first major involvement in commercial film was with ''The Eiger Sanction (film), The Eiger Sanction'' (1975), in which he taught Clint Eastwood how to climb in the Yosemite valley before the film was shot in Grindelwald, Switzerland in 1974.McGilligan, p. 244 Hoover has since been a cinematographer for the documentaries ''To the Ends of the Earth'' (1983), ''To the Limit'' (1989), ''The Endless Summer 2'' (1994) and ''Zion Canyon: Treasure of the Gods''. Short Film
A short film is any motion picture that is short enough in running time not to be considered a feature film. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". In the United States, short films were generally termed short subjects from the 1920s into the 1970s when confined to two 35 mm reels or less, and featurettes for a film of three or four reels. "Short" was an abbreviation for either term. The increasingly rare industry term "short subject" carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers with either a low budget or no budget at all. Academy Award For Best Live Action Short Film
The Academy Award for Best Live Action Short Film is an award presented at the annual Academy Awards ceremony. The award has existed, under various names, since 1957. From 1936 until 1956 there were two separate awards, "Best Short Subject, One-reel" and "Best Short Subject, Two-reel", referring to the running time of the short: a standard Reel#Motion picture terminology, reel of film is 1000 feet, or about 11 minutes of run time. A third category "Best Short Subject, color" was used only for 1936 and 1937. From the initiation of short subject awards for 1932 until 1935 the terms were "Best Short Subject, comedy" and "Best Short Subject, novelty". These categories were merged starting with the 1957 awards, under the name "Short Subjects, Live Action Subjects", which was used until 1970. 57th Academy Awards
The 57th Academy Awards were presented March 25, 1985, at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, Los Angeles. Jack Lemmon presided over the ceremonies. This ceremony marked the first time that multiple black nominees would win an Oscar, when Prince and Stevie Wonder won for their respective work on '' Purple Rain'' and '' The Woman in Red''.
