Unui Doo
Unui Doo (born Chan Yau-nui; 1874 – 18 August 1940) was a Chinese New Zealand businesswoman and shopkeeper. Born in Xinhui, Guangdong, she immigrated to New Zealand in 1915. She managed a grocery store in Auckland that served as a social centre for the Chinese community. Known as "Grandmother Doo", she was the matriarch of the Doo clan and one of the few Chinese women living in New Zealand before the 1930s. Early life and marriage Chan Yau-nui was born in Xinhui, Guangdong, China, sometime between 1873 and 1875. She was one of seven children born to She Hoo Tai and Chan Doon Tai, a farmer and rice merchant. She had no formal education and her feet were bound. She married Thomas Wong Doo in Canton in 1898. Chinese New Zealanders
Chinese New Zealanders ( mi, Tāngata Hainamana o Aotearoa; ) or Sino-New Zealanders are New Zealanders of Chinese ancestry. The largest subset of Asian New Zealanders, many of the Chinese immigrants came from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, or other countries that have large populations of Chinese diaspora. Today's Chinese New Zealand group is composed of diasporic communities from Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Vietnam and Singapore. The Worshipful Company of Grocers is one of the 110 Livery Companies of the City of London and ranks second in order of precedence. The Grocers' Company was established in 1345 for merchants occupied in the trade of grocer and is one of the Great Twelve City Livery Companies. Xinhui District
Xinhui, alternately romanized as Sunwui and also known as Kuixiang, is an urban district of Jiangmen in Guangdong, China. It grew from a separate city founded at the confluence of the Tan and West Rivers. It has a population of about 735,500, 98% of whom are Han Chinese but many of whom speak a dialect of Cantonese as their first language. Xinhui is best known in China for its ''chenpi'', a kind of dried Mandarin orange peel. Geography Xinhui is situated at the confluence of the Tan and West Rivers in the southwestern area of the Pearl River Delta. It borders the South China Sea and adjoins Macao and Hong Kong.
