União Almeirim
União Futebol Clube de Almeirim is a Portuguese association football club, founded in Almeirim in 1934. They play in the Santarém FA Second Division, holding home matches at the ''Estádio Dom Manuel de Mello''. History Founded on 24 June 1934 as ''União Foot-Ball Club de Almeirim'' by Jacinto Pereira, Adelino Soler, Manuel Pereira, Renato André, Diamantino Correia e Manuel de Oliveira, the club started playing in 1945, with their youth sides playing in the Campeonato Regional de Juniores. They won their first title in 1954, after lifting the second division of the regional leagues. União Almeirim first reached the Terceira Divisão in 1968, and achieved a first-ever promotion to Segunda Divisão in 1985. In the 2000s, they struggled severely with financial problems, and had a project named "Viver UFCA" started to revitalize the club in 2013. Jorge Ferreira da Silva (born 14 December 1967 in Carangola, Minas Gerais), commonly known as Palhinha, is a retired Brazilian footballer who played as an attacking midfielder or as a forward. Clubs career Palhinha played for São Paulo in the golden years of 1992 and 1993 – alongside star players like Raí, Leonardo, Toninho Cerezo, Cafu and Müller – to win the Copa Libertadores and Intercontinental Cup twice, in 1992 and 1993. In 1992, he also was the top scorer of the Copa Libertadores, with 7 goals. He also conquered the São Paulo State Championship in 1992 against the Palmeiras, and later became the double champions of Recopa Sudamericana in 1993 and 1994 against Cruzeiro and Botafogo, respectively. Almeirim
Almeirim () is a city and a municipality in Santarém District, Portugal. The population in 2011 was 23,376, in an area of 222.12 km². The city proper had a population of 10,520 in 2001. History There are vestiges of mid-Paleolithic to Mesolithic period along the territory, including traces from Neolithic, Calcolithic and Bronze Age remnants. The Iron Age also marked this region, with archaeological excavations unearthing settlements and artefacts. Roman legions of Décimo Junius Brutus occupied the territory, following the Tagus upstream and disembarking in Santarém, where they left their marks. These, along with other groups, occupied arable lands, beginning in the first century A.D.
