Saint Joseph University of Beirut (; French language, French: ''Université Saint-Joseph de Beyrouth'', commonly known as USJ) is a private Catholic Church, Catholic research university in Beirut, Lebanon, founded in 1875 by French Society of Jesus, Jesuit missionaries and subsidized by the Government of France during the time when Mount Lebanon Mutasarrifate, Lebanon was under Ottoman rule. ''Ad maiorem Dei gloriam'' or ''Ad majórem Dei glóriam'', also rendered as the abbreviation AMDG, is a Latin language, Latin quote which can be translated as "For the greater glory of God." It has been used as a rallying cry for Catholics throughout history, especially during the Thirty Years' War, and is currently the motto of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), an order of the Catholic Church.
