University of Technology Sarawak (abbreviated as UTS) is a private university and state government-linked university as it is wholly owned by Yayasan Sarawak located in Sibu, Sarawak. History The university was established on 1 April 2013 as "University College of Technology Sarawak" (UCTS). It is the first university in Sarawak owned by the state government. Phase I of the project was constructed by Hock Peng Organisation with Naim Engineering as joint venture partner. In 2015, the university became the first university in the world to receive platinum award for Green Building Index (GBI). The university building uses 50% less energy comparing to a typical building, using technologies such as LED bulbs with motion sensors, harvesting rainwater for ponds, air-conditioning, flushing toilets, and gardening. Sibu (; Foochow Romanized, Hokchew Romanized: ''Sĭ-bŭ'') is a landlocked city in the central region of Sarawak. It is the capital of Sibu District in Sibu Division, Sarawak, Malaysia. The city is located on the island of Borneo and covers an area of . It is located at the confluence of the Rajang River, Rajang and Igan Rivers, some 60 kilometres from the South China Sea and approximately north-east of the state capital Kuching. Yayasan Sarawak
The Sarawak Foundation, also known as Yayasan Sarawak is a statutory body set up to help improve the quality of education of Sarawak. It is often associated with the provision of scholarships and study loans. History The Sarawak Foundation was established on 21 May 1971 through the Yayasan Sarawak Ordinance 1971 by the government of Sarawak. The idea to set up the foundation was mooted by Abdul Rahman Ya'kub, the chief minister of Sarawak at the time. Rahman Ya'kub aimed to improve the standard of education amongst the people of Sarawak, and became the first chairman of the Sarawak Foundation.
