Oxford University Press
Oxford University Press (OUP) is the university press of the University of Oxford. It is the largest university press in the world, and its printing history dates back to the 1480s. Having been officially granted the legal right to print books by decree in 1586, it is the second oldest university press after Cambridge University Press. It is a department of the University of Oxford and is governed by a group of 15 academics known as the Delegates of the Press, who are appointed by the vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford. The Delegates of the Press are led by the Secretary to the Delegates, who serves as OUP's chief executive and as its major representative on other university bodies. University Press
A university press is an academic publishing house specializing in monographs and scholarly journals. Most are nonprofit organizations and an integral component of a large research university. They publish work that has been reviewed by scholars in the field. They produce mainly academic works but also often have trade books for a lay audience. These trade books also get peer reviewed. Because scholarly books are mostly unprofitable, university presses may also publish textbooks and reference works, which tend to have larger audiences and sell more copies. Most university presses operate at a loss and are subsidized by their owners; others are required to break even. The ''University Press'', also commonly referred to as the ''UP'', is the student-run magazine of Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida, US. The magazine is published semimonthly during the fall and spring semesters. The current editor-in-chief is Savannah Peifer. History The UP in its current form was established in 1998 after being shut down for a period of nine months. It restarted up as a broadsheet but since has changed its format to a tabloid or magazine sized paper. The ''University Press'' and FAU's student government have clashed a number of times in recent years. In 2004, the student government tried to lock the paper's staff out of their offices, cut their funding, and fire their adviser. This resulted from claims that UP staff were not conducting their required office hours. The ''University Press'', also commonly referred to as the UP, is the student-run newspaper of Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas, United States. The student newspaper gained the name University Press in 1971. History When South Park Junior College, now Lamar University, began in 1923, a Student Publications Board was appointed to study the need for a student newspaper. The committee decided that, indeed, the school needed a newspaper. The committee and the student body came up with the contraction for South Park and the word “Plug” to indicate action — hence, The S’Park Plug. Elery Holland was named the first editor. The staff managed to publish four issues for 1923–24, quite an accomplishment for a fledgling little school. E.C. Brodie, an English professor, served as the first faculty adviser. Canadian University Press is a non-profit co-operative and newswire service owned by more than 50 student newspapers at post-secondary schools in Canada. Founded in 1938, CUP is the oldest student newswire service in the world and the oldest national student organization in North America. Many successful Canadian journalists got their starts in CUP and its member papers. CUP began as a syndication services that facilitated transnational story-sharing.
