University of Gezira, or U of G, is a public university located in Wad Medani, Sudan. It is a member of the Federation of the Universities of the Islamic World. History The University Of Gezira (U. of G.) was founded in 1975 as a public university, and the first Sudanese university outside of Khartoum by the former mayor then turned governor Abdelrahim Mahmoud, along with the help of president Gaafar Nimeiry in the city of Wad Madani. The university is near one of the biggest agricultural projects in Africa – the Gezira Project, historically the backbone of the Sudanese economy. Initially, there were only a handful of schools, but today the university has expanded to fourteen schools and four institutes. At its prime in the late 20th century, the university was seen as one of the top institutions in the country, at times even rivaling the University of Khartoum. The university has faculties of Education and Humanities, Shariah and Islamic Studies, of Pure and Applied Sciences, Engineering and medicine. The university has its origins in the Islamic African Centre, established in Khartoum in 1977 with financial help from Saudi Arabia and other Arab States of the Persian Gulf to train preachers and educate young African Muslims and "imbue them with the Salafist view of Islam." Ahfad University for Women is a private women's university in Omdurman, Sudan that was founded in 1966, by Yusuf Badri, son of the Mahdist soldier Babiker Badri. The university began with only 23 students and 3 teachers. It was the first Sudanese women's college. The current president is Dr. Gasim Badri, Yusuf Badri's son. History The Ahfad University for Women was founded in a familial tradition of educating girls in Sudan. After the battle of 1898 when Sudanese Mahdist forces were defeated by the Anglo-Egyptian army, Babiker Badri — a Sudanese survivor — settled in the village of Rufu'a.
