University Hills, Los Angeles
University Hills is a neighborhood on the East Side of Los Angeles, California. It consists of the residential areas surrounding California State University, Los Angeles . History University Hills is in the eastern San Rafael Hills. They were part of the Pre-columbian homeland of the Tongva Indians for thousands of years, and they named this area ''Otsunga'' (place of roses). It is the former site of one of California's 36 original adobes, built in 1776 by Franciscan missionaries, and destroyed by a fire in 1908. The area was part of the 1831 Mexican land grant of Rancho Rosa Castilla, given to Juan Ballesteros by Alta California Governor Manuel Victoria. It was named for the abundant amount of native Wood roses (''Rosa californica'') along the creek. In 1852, after statehood, the title passed to Jean-Baptiste Batz and his wife, Catalina. Los Angeles Neighborhood Signs
The City of Los Angeles posts neighborhood signs to identify the geographic boundaries of different neighborhoods. LAist stated that these signs indicate “official L.A. neighborhood” designation and in 2008 estimated that Los Angeles had 185 neighborhoods with an official "blue sign.” Design The standard neighborhood sign is rectangular and features white letters on a blue background. The city seal is displayed on the sign. Alternative colors and shapes are possible upon request provided they comply with federal and state law. Example: octagonal signs painted red are reserved for stop signs. Process The Los Angeles City Council adopted a policy on January 31, 2006 (Council File No. 02-0196), which provided a process to either change a neighborhood name or create one where none previously existed. Rancho Rosa Castilla
Rancho Rosa Castilla was a Mexican land grant in the southwestern San Rafael Hills, in present day Los Angeles County, California, given to Juan Ballesteros in 1831 by Governor Manuel Victoria. It included present day Rose Hills, Lincoln Heights, City Terrace, El Sereno and portions of South Pasadena, Alhambra, and Monterey Park. After California statehood, the land grant failed to receive confirmation from the U.S. Public Land Commission. Valley Boulevard
Valley Boulevard is a street in Southern California, running east from Los Angeles to Pomona, where it becomes Holt Avenue, and a continuation from Fontana to Colton. It generally parallels Interstate 10 (I-10) and State Route 60 (CA 60), and is the original alignment of U.S. Route 60 (US 60). City Terrace is an unincorporated area of East Los Angeles, in Los Angeles County, California, east of Downtown Los Angeles. It contains City Terrace Elementary School, Robert F. El Sereno (Spanish, "The Serene One") is a Los Angeles neighborhood in the Eastside Los Angeles region of Los Angeles County, California. History Tongva The Tongva village of Otsungna was situated in today's El Sereno on the banks of a stream that was later named Arroyo Rosa de Castilla, which ran east of present-day Guardia and Farnsworth avenues. A trail connected Otsungna to the village of Yangna on the Los Angeles River, then on to the village of Sibagna, near the eventual site of the Mission San Gabriel.
