This is a list of universities and colleges in Slovakia. Terminology The Slovak term "vysoká škola" ("school of higher education", literally "high school", compare the German name ''Hochschule''), which for lack of other expressions is also translated into English as "college", can refer to all schools of higher (i.e. tertiary) education, or in a narrower sense only to those schools of higher education that are not universities. Hochschule
' (, plural: ') is the generic term in German for institutions of higher education, corresponding to ''universities'' and ''colleges'' in English. The term ''Universität'' (plural: ''Universitäten'') is reserved for institutions with the right to confer doctorates. In contrast, ''Hochschule'' encompasses ''Universitäten'' as well as institutions that are not authorized to confer doctorates. Roughly equivalent terms to ''Hochschule'' are used in some other European countries, such as ''högskola'' in Sweden and Finland, ''hogeschool'' in the Netherlands and Flanders, and ' (literally "main school") in Hungary, as well as in post-Soviet countries (deriving from высшее учебное заведение) in Central Europe, in Bulgaria ( висше училище) and Romania. Catholic University in Ružomberok (CU) is a public university with religious character. The Conference of Slovak Bishops and National Council of the Slovak Republic took part in its foundation in 2000. CU performs its activities especially in the areas of the humanities, historical, pedagogical, and social and health sciences, as well as in the areas of art, economics, management, and law. University Of Žilina
The University of Žilina was established on 1 October 1953 as the College of Railways in Praha, Slovakia, Prague. In 1959, the institution changed its name to the University of Transport and moved to Žilina. As a result of the increasing role of communications within the curriculum and research orientation of the university, the name was amended to the University of Transport and Communications in 1980. It was renamed again to the University of Žilina pursuant to the law passed by the National Council of the Slovak Republic, Slovak National Council on 20 November 1996.
