The Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango (''Juarez University of the State of Durango'', or UJED) is an institution of higher education in the state of Durango, Mexico. Founded in 1856 as a small state college, the university underwent a series of expansions over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, emerging as a full-scale public research institute in the 1970s with the addition of a medical school and an institute of scientific research. Today the university is one of the largest in the state of Durango, with an enrollment of over 14,000 students. History Foundation In 1856, José de la Bárcena founded the ''Colegio Civil del Estado'' (State Civil College); this institution occupied the university's Central Building on January 25, 1860. The original motto was ''Virtuti et Merito'' (Virtue and Merit). Guillermo Peschard
Guillermo Peschard Delgado (August 19, 1902 – April 21, 1978) was an orthodontic dentist and academic. As a professor of dentistry at the Universidad Juárez del Estado de Durango, he helped found the university's School of Dentistry. Biography Peschard was born in the city of Durango, Mexico on August 19, 1902. He was one of several siblings, including his brothers Armando Peschard Delgado and Eugenio Peschard. He completed his undergraduate training at the Juárez Institute, after which he moved to Mexico City, where he taught at the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria. Alexandro Martínez Camberos (1916-1999) was a Mexican poet, writer, lawyer and judge. He published articles and essays in several newspapers and wrote books on poetry, jurisprudence and social issues.
