The 1990 United States Senate election in Alabama was held on November 6, 1990. Incumbent Democratic U.S. Senator Howell Heflin won re-election to a third term. As of 2024, it is the last time a Democrat was elected to the Class 2 Senate seat in Alabama until 2017, and the last time overall in which a Democrat was elected to and served a full term as a Democrat in the U.S. Senate from Alabama. Howell Heflin
Howell Thomas Heflin (June 19, 1921 – March 29, 2005) was an American lawyer and politician who served in the United States Senate, representing Alabama, from 1979 to 1997. Early life Heflin was born on June 19, 1921, in Poulan, Georgia. He attended public school in Alabama, graduating from Colbert County High School in Leighton. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1942 from Birmingham-Southern College in Birmingham, where he became a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity. There was a tradition of politics in his family: He was a nephew of James Thomas Heflin, a prominent white supremacist politician and U.S. Senator, and great-nephew of Robert Stell Heflin, a U.S. Representative. During World War II, from 1942 to 1946, Heflin served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps. The 2017 United States Senate special election in Alabama took place on December 12, 2017, to fill a vacancy in the U.S. Senate through the end of the term ending on January 3, 2021. The vacancy arose from Jeff Sessions' resignation, on February 8, 2017, to serve as the 84th United States attorney general. This was the first open Senate seat in the state since 1996, when Sessions was elected for his first term. Democratic candidate Doug Jones defeated Republican candidate Roy Moore by a margin of 21,924 votes (1.63%). Jones became the first Democrat to win a U.S. Senate seat in Alabama since 1992. On February 9, 2017, Governor Robert J. Bentley appointed Luther Strange, the attorney general of Alabama, to fill the vacancy until a special election could take place. The 1990 United States Senate elections were held on Tuesday, November 6, 1990. The Democratic Party increased its majority with a net gain of one seat from the Republican Party. The election took place in the middle of President George H. W. Bush's term, and, as with most other midterm elections, the party not holding the presidency gained seats in Congress. These elections featured the smallest seat change in history since the passage of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913 with only one seat changing parties, and this would happen again in 2022.
