United States Senate
The United States Senate is the upper chamber of the United States Congress, with the House of Representatives being the lower chamber. Together they compose the national bicameral legislature of the United States. The composition and powers of the Senate are established by Article One of the United States Constitution. The Senate is composed of senators, each of whom represents a single state in its entirety. Each of the 50 states is equally represented by two senators who serve staggered terms of six years, for a total of 100 senators. Levi Ankeny
Levi Ankeny (August 1, 1844March 29, 1921) was a Republican United States Senator from the state of Washington. He was born in Buchanan County, Missouri near St. Joseph, but crossed the plains to Oregon in 1850 with his parents and settled in Portland. He attended the rural schools and later Kingsley Academy in Portland. He worked in business in Lewiston, Idaho; Orofino, Idaho; and Florence, Idaho. He also became the mayor of Lewiston. He moved to Walla Walla, Washington and engaged in banking. He was appointed a member of the Pan-American Exposition Commission and became its chairman. In 1902 he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, and served from March 4, 1903 to March 3, 1909. He failed to be renominated in 1908. Samuel Piles
Samuel Henry Piles (December 28, 1858March 11, 1940) was an American politician, attorney, and diplomat who served as a United States senator from Washington. Early life Piles was born near Smithland, Kentucky, the son of Samuel Henry Piles (d. 1904) and Gabriella Lillard. The senior Piles was sheriff of Livingston County, and later practiced law. Samuel Jr. attended private schools in Kentucky before studying law. Career Piles was admitted to the bar in 1883, and commenced practice in Snohomish, Territory of Washington. He moved to Spokane in 1886 and later in the same year to Seattle, where he practiced law. He was assistant prosecuting attorney for the third judicial district of the Territory of Washington from 1887 to 1889 and city attorney of Seattle from 1888 to 1889. Walter Evans Edge (November 20, 1873October 29, 1956) was an American diplomat and Republican politician who served as the 36th governor of New Jersey, from 1917 to 1919 and again from 1944 to 1947, during both World War I and World War II.
