Piles was born near Smithland, Kentucky, the son of Samuel Henry Piles (d. 1904) and Gabriella Lillard. The senior Piles was sheriff of Livingston County, and later practiced law. Samuel Jr. attended private schools in Kentucky before studying law.Career
