United States Post Office (Williamsburg, Brooklyn)
US Post Office-Metropolitan Station, originally known as Station "A," is a historic post office building located at Williamsburg in Brooklyn, New York, United States. It was built in 1936, and is one of a number of post offices in New York designed by the Office of the Supervising Architect under Louis A. Simon. The building is a two-story, flat roofed brick building with a three bay wide central pavilion flanked by three bay wide wings in the Colonial Revival style. Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Williamsburg is a neighborhood in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, bordered by Greenpoint to the north; Bedford–Stuyvesant to the south; Bushwick and East Williamsburg to the east; and the East River to the west. It was an independent city until 1855, when it was annexed by Brooklyn; at that time, the spelling was changed from Williamsburgh (with an "h") to Williamsburg. Williamsburg, especially near the waterfront, was a vital industrial district until the mid-20th century. As many of the jobs were outsourced beginning in the 1970s, the area endured a period of economic contraction which did not begin to turn around until activist groups began to address housing, infrastructure, and youth education issues in the late 20th century. Lorimer Rich
Lorimer Rich (December 24, 1891 – June 2, 1978) was an American architect, born in Camden, New York. He is now best remembered for collaborating with sculptor Thomas Hudson Jones on the winning entry in a nationwide competition to create a design for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. Rich graduated from Syracuse University in 1914. This was followed by further studies in Europe, a standard path for many young American architects of that era. Shortly thereafter he joined the US Army and served in World War I. Upon returning to the United States, he worked for the prestigious architectural firm McKim, Mead and White, based in New York City. In 1928 he established his own firm there. He gained a reputation as a designer of post offices for the federal government. Rich returned to Camden after retiring from practice; he died there in 1978. The Colonial Revival architectural style seeks to revive elements of American colonial architecture. The beginnings of the Colonial Revival style are often attributed to the Centennial Exhibition of 1876, which reawakened Americans to the architectural traditions of their colonial past. Fairly small numbers of Colonial Revival homes were built –1910, a period when Queen Anne-style architecture was dominant in the United States.
