As the Korean War began and Truman's personal popularity plummeted for a second time during his presidency, his Democratic Party lost a net 28 seats to the Republican Party. 1946 United States House Of Representatives Elections In Kansas
The 1946 United States House of Representatives elections took place 19 months after President Harry S. Truman assumed office upon the death of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Truman was vice president under President Franklin D. Roosevelt and was thrust into the presidency following Roosevelt's death. Truman did not garner the same support as the deceased president. Democrats had controlled Congress since 1931, for 16 years, and Roosevelt had been elected to a record four terms in office. The 1946 election resulted in Republicans picking up 55 seats to win majority control. Ben Hugh Guill (September 8, 1909 – January 15, 1994) was a short-term Republican member of the United States House of Representatives from Texas's 18th congressional district, which then encompassed the Panhandle counties. He won a special election and served the remaining eight months in office. Early life and education Guill was born in Smyrna in Rutherford County in central Tennessee.
