The United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota is the United States Attorney responsible for representing the federal government in the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. By statute, the U.S. Attorney is responsible for prosecuting both federal crimes and all serious crimes committed by adults in the District of South Dakota. Therefore, the U.S. Attorney for the South Dakota serves as both the federal prosecutor (as in the other 92 U.S. Attorneys' offices) and as the local district attorney. the Acting United States Attorney is Dennis R. The United States Department of Justice (DOJ), also known as the Justice Department, is a federal executive department of the United States government tasked with the enforcement of federal law and administration of justice in the United States. Karen Elizabeth Schreier (born July 29, 1956) is a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota and was the 36th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Early life and education Born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Schreier earned an Artium Baccalaureus degree from Saint Louis University in 1978 and a Juris Doctor from the Saint Louis University School of Law in 1981. Career Schreier worked as a judicial law clerk for South Dakota Supreme Court Justice Francis G. Dunn from 1981 until 1982. Schreier worked in private law practice in Sioux Falls from 1982 until 1993. She then became the United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota in 1993. Ted McBride (1949–2018) was an American attorney and 37th United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota. Early life and education Ted McBride graduated with a J.D. University of South Dakota School of Law in 1978. Career McBride initially served as the interim U.S. Attorney in 1993, after the United States Senate voted to not confirm the appointment of Kevin Schieffer after the controversial handling of the Sue-Dinosaur legal dispute. McBride was then appointed by President Bill Clinton to be the United States Attorney for the District of South Dakota in 1999 to replace outgoing U.S. Attorney Karen Schreier, who was appointed a U.S. District Judge by Clinton.
