United States At The 2018 Winter Paralympics
The United States competed at the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea from 9 to 18 March 2018. With 13 gold, 15 silver and 8 bronze medals, the US athletes had their best performance in 16 years and were the most successful national selection for the first time since 1994, ahead of the neutral athletes from Russia and the Canadian team. The most successful athlete within the US team was Oksana Masters with two gold, two silver and one bronze medal. Kendall Gretsch and Brenna Huckaby also each won two gold medals. With one gold, four silver and one bronze, David Cnossen was the most successful male US participant of the 2018 Paralympics. Brenna Huckaby
Brenna Huckaby (born January 22, 1996) is an American snowboarder. She competed at the 2018 Winter Paralympics, winning gold medals in the snowboard cross and banked slalom, and she won gold and a bronze medal at the 2022 Winter Paralympics. She is the first Paralympian to appear in the Swimsuit Issue of ''Sports Illustrated''. Early life and education Huckaby has two brothers. She was a nationally ranked gymnast. She learned to snowboard at age 15 at the National Ability Center. While still in school, Huckaby moved to Utah to pursue snowboarding. Amy Michelle Purdy (born November 7, 1979) is an American actress, model, para-snowboarder, motivational speaker, clothing designer and author. Purdy is a 2014 Paralympic bronze medalist, 2018 Paralympics silver medalist, and one of the top motivational speakers in the world. She is also the co-founder of Adaptive Action Sports. Life and career Purdy was born in Las Vegas in 1979. When she was 19 years old, she contracted Neisseria meningitidis, a form of bacterial meningitis. The disease affected her circulatory system when the infection led to septic shock; both of her legs had to be amputated below the knee, she lost both kidneys, and her spleen had to be removed. Doctors gave Purdy a 2% chance of survival. Two years later, she received a kidney transplant from her father. Purdy began snowboarding seven months after she received her prosthetic legs. Andy Soule
Andrew Soule (born January 2, 1980) is an American Nordic skier and veteran of the United States Army. A double-leg amputee due to injuries received in the War in Afghanistan, Soule uses a sit-ski in competitions. Biography and career A native of Pearland, Texas, Soule attended Texas A&M University as a member of the Corps of Cadets; he was a student there when the September 11 attacks occurred. At the end of that school year, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and, after completing basic training, was deployed to Afghanistan. On May 21, 2005, while on a security patrol in the Shinkay District, his Humvee was struck by an improvised explosive device. The explosion killed one soldier, destroyed Soule's legs, leading to their amputation above the knees, and lightly wounded two other soldiers. Mike Minor (snowboarder)
Mike Minor (born July 28, 1990) is an American athlete, World Champion snowboarder, and a Paralympian who competed for the United States at the 2018 Winter Paralympics. He won gold in Snowboarding at the 2018 Winter Paralympics – Men's banked slalom and bronze in Men's snowboard cross division SB-UL. During his childhood, Minor was given a prosthetic part for his right arm. He started skiing at the age of two and snowboarding at the age of seven.
