United States At The 2006 Winter Paralympics
The United States sent 56 athletes (45 men and 11 women) to the 2006 Winter Paralympics in Turin, Italy, the largest delegation of any nation. Laurie Stephens
Laurie Stephens (born March 5, 1984) is an alpine monoskier who has spina bifida. She has won multiple medals for the United States at the Paralympics. She has also had success at the IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup. Career Laurie Stephens started skiing at age 12 on Loon Mountain in New Hampshire and then began racing 3 years later at age 15 when she became a member of Chris Devlin-Young's New England Disabled Ski Team. Stephens competes in 5 different skiing events which are the Downhill, Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G, and Super Combined. She has competed in 4 Paralympic games and 5 world championships. Her debut as a Paralympian was in 2006 and since she has competed in the 2010, 2014, and the 2018 games. Stephani Victor (born August 29, 1969) is an LW 12–2 alpine skier Paralympic multi medalist. Early life and education Stephani Victor was born on August 29, 1969, in Ames, Iowa. She finished high school in Sewickley, Pennsylvania and graduated from a film studies program at the University of Southern California in 1992. Personal life Stephani Victor lost her legs after she was pinned between two cars. "The seemingly insurmountable challenge of no longer having legs was so difficult and extreme beyond my imagination that it forced me to fight to maintain my independence. Slalom is an alpine skiing and alpine snowboarding discipline, involving skiing between poles or gates. Sandy Dukat
Sandra "Sandy" Dukat (born May 3, 1972) is an American Paralympic athlete. Born with proximal femoral focal deficiency, she had her right leg amputated above the knee at the age of four. She has competed internationally in alpine skiing, swimming and triathlon. , she holds the marathon world record for above-knee amputee women. Sporting career Dukat grew up competing in able-bodied sports. She played basketball, high-jumped and was on her high school swim team. When she called the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (RIC) looking for an amputee support group, she found out about their sports teams. Allison Jones (athlete)
Allison Jones (born in Amarillo, Texas, on May 12, 1984) is a Paralympic skier and cyclist for the United States of America. She was born with the birth defect proximal femoral focal deficiency (PFFD), which left her without a right femur. She underwent surgery at age 7 months to amputate her right foot, allowing her to more easily wear a prosthetic leg. She received her first prosthetic leg at 9 months of age. Allison moved from Amarillo, TX to Colorado Springs, CO at age 2 and a half. Education She has a mechanical engineering degree from University of Denver where she received the "Pioneer Award". Career At the 2006 Winter Paralympics she won a gold medal for slalom in the standing category.
