United States Army Steam Locomotive No. 4039 is located in the Whippany section of Hanover Township, Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The locomotive was built in 1942 and added to the National Register of Historic Places on March 4, 2002. The locomotive is part of the Whippany Railway Museum. History The locomotive was built by the American Locomotive Company in November 1942 for the U.S. War Department. The locomotive is an S155 class 0-6-0 "Switching"-type built for Standard gauge track. The intended use of the locomotive was for U.S. military service in the Far East, Africa and Europe, but instead was used for switching operations for military bases within the United States during World War II. After World War II the locomotive was no longer needed by the War Department and was sold to the Virginia Blue Ridge Railway on February 17, 1947. The American Locomotive Company (often shortened to ALCO, ALCo or Alco) was an American manufacturer of locomotives, diesel generators, steel, and tanks that operated from 1901 to 1969. The company was formed by the merger of seven smaller locomotive manufacturers and Schenectady Locomotive Works, Schenectady Locomotive Engine Manufactory of Schenectady, New York. A subsidiary, American Locomotive Automobile Company, designed and manufactured automobiles under the Alco brand from 1905 to 1913. ALCO also produced nuclear reactors from 1954 to 1962. The company changed its name to Alco Products, Incorporated in 1955. In 1964, the Worthington Corporation acquired the company. The company went out of business in 1969. Duluth and Northeastern 29 is a preserved 0-6-0 switcher steam locomotive built in 1944 by the Lima Locomotive Works for the United States Army Transportation Corps. It is currently owned and operated by the Prairie Village, Herman and Milwaukee Railroad in Prairie Village, South Dakota. History Revenue service No. 29 was initially constructed by the Lima Locomotive Works in Lima, Ohio in January 1944 for the United States War Department during World War II as locomotive No. 4047. Wilmington and Western 58 is an 0-6-0 "Switcher" type steam locomotive, originally built by Baldwin in 1907 for the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway. It subsequently went through several ownership changes in both the steam era and the preservation era before it eventually found its way to the Wilmington and Western Railroad in 1973. Presently, No. 58 is used to operate tourist trains between Wilmington and Hockessin, Delaware. History Revenue service No. 58 was built in October 1907 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. It was the sixth out of seven engines constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works of Philadelphia for delivery to the Atlanta, Birmingham and Atlantic Railway, with the others numbered 53-57 and 59.
