United Railways (Oregon)
United Railways was a railroad in Oregon. Begun as an electric interurban railway in 1911, passenger service was never effective and the road became a freight link to the Tualatin Valley. The company was dissolved in 1944, but the railroad line remains active. History Initially built as an interurban electric railway, the main line opened on April 16, 1911 between Portland and Wilkesboro. Unusual for interurbans, the line featured a long tunnel beneath Cornelius Pass. The company had a close working relationship with the Oregon Electric Railway. As such, when the Oregon Electric changed their electrification voltage in 1912, United Railways implemented the same system. Service south of Linnton was suspended in 1915 amid a fare dispute, necessitating passengers wishing to continue to Portland to transfer to mainline Spokane, Portland and Seattle Railway trains. United Railways And Electric Company
The United Railways and Electric Company was a street railway company in the Baltimore Metropolitan Area of the U.S. state of Maryland from 1899 to 1935. In 1900, the company built the Power Plant in Baltimore's Inner Harbor to provide electrical power to the system. The system suffered extensive damage during the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904, but the company rebuilt under the supervision of its president, John Mifflin Hood. United Railways declared bankruptcy in 1933. The company was reorganized in 1935 as the Baltimore Transit Company. In 1970 the transit company was absorbed into the Maryland Transit Administration, a public agency. Michigan United Railways
Michigan United Railways (MUR) was an interurban which owned and leased numerous lines in the state of Michigan during the early twentieth century. Corporate history The company incorporated in Kalamazoo on March 31, 1906, with the intention of owning a line from Kalamazoo connecting eastwards to Battle Creek, Jackson, Lansing and St. Johns. On May 1 of that year the MUR consolidated the Lansing & Suburban Traction, Lansing City Electric, Michigan Traction Extension and Michigan Traction. The company also leased Jackson and Battle Creek Traction and the Lansing & Jackson. Taken together, these moves gave the company two intercity lines; one running from Kalamazoo to Jackson and other from Lansing to St. Johns, and the local streetcar operations in Kalamazoo, Battle Creek and Lansing.
