United Nations Stakes
The United Nations Stakes is a Graded stakes race, Grade I American Thoroughbred horse race for three-year-olds and older run over a distance of one and three-eighth miles on the grass, turf held annually in July at Monmouth Park Racetrack in Oceanport, New Jersey. The event currently offers a purse of $600,000. History The inaugural running of the event was on 26 September 1953 at the Atlantic City Race Course in Mays Landing, New Jersey as an Invitational handicap event, The United Nations Handicap over the distance of miles. The event was named after the intergovernmental organization United Nations with the idea to promote the internationalization of the sport of horse racing whereby foreign horses bred, owned and trained would compete against each other in the US. Yagli (horse)
Yagli (foaled in 1993 in Kentucky) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse. He was bred and raced by prominent horseman and CEO of Gulfstream Aerospace Allen Paulson, who also owned U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee, Cigar, European Horse of the Year and winner of the 1991 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Arazi, as well as 2002 American Horse of the Year Azeri, among others. A colt who developed late, Yagli began racing at age three but did not meet with much success until age five in 1998 when he won three Graded stakes races including the Hialeah Turf Cup Handicap and finished second in the Breeders' Cup Turf. The following year, he won three Grade I races at age six in 1999. Manila (born 1983 in Kentucky, died 2009, 28 February, in İzmit, Turkey) was an American Thoroughbred Hall of Fame Champion racehorse. He was sired by Northern Dancer's son Lyphard, out of the mare Dona Ysidra. He was bred by Filipino food and beverage magnate Eduardo Cojuangco, Jr. who owned Dona Ysidra and who named her for his grandfather's sister, Dona Ysidra Cojuangco (1867–1960) of Tarlac, reportedly the founder of the Cojuangco family fortune. Manila was raced by Lexington, Kentucky thoroughbred agent Bradley M. Shannon and trained by future U.S. Racing Hall of Fame inductee LeRoy Jolley. Bet Twice (April 20, 1984 – March 5, 1999) was a multi-millionaire American thoroughbred racehorse and sire. Foaled in Kentucky, he was out of the marGolden Dustand was sired bSportin' Life who in turn was the son of the British Triple Crown champion Nijinsky. He was bred by William S. Farish III and E. J. Hudson and born on what became Lane's End Farm in Versailles, Kentucky. Two-year-old season Bet Twice was owned by a syndicate of approximately three dozen that included baseball players Pete Rose and Garry Maddox. Yankee Affair
Yankee Affair (1982–1991) was an American multi-millionaire Thoroughbred racehorse. Foaled May 1, 1982 in Pennsylvania, he was purchased for $10,200 as a yearling by trainer Henry L. Carroll who owned one-third along with partners Jay Garsman and Martin Scheinman. He was raced under the ''nom de course'' Ju Ju Gen Stable, his three owners choosing the name as they referred to themselves as ''two Jews and a Gentile.'' Yankee Affair began racing on dirt but proved best on the turf. In 1987 the five-year-old Yankee Affair began showing his ability on the turf, winning three stakes races including the Laurel Turf Cup Stakes at Laurel Park Racecourse near Laurel, Maryland. Steinlen (1983 – 9 June 2001) was a Thoroughbred racehorse grass champion male. He was voted the American Champion Male Turf Horse for 1989 following his win in that year's Breeders' Cup Mile. He was bred in the name of Allez France Stables, a '' nom de course'' for owner Daniel Wildenstein. Steinlen was a stakes winner in France prior to being sent to compete in the United States. Sky Classic (March 17, 1987 – April 30, 2015) was a Canadian Thoroughbred Hall of Fame racehorse. A son of U.K. Triple Crown champion Nijinsky, in 1989 Sky Classic won the Sovereign Award for Champion 2-Year-Old Male Horse in Canada but injuries kept him out for the most of the 1990 racing season. Back racing on grass in 1991, Sky Classic won six of his nine starts including the prestigious Rothmans International in course record time. Star of Cozzene (foaled 1988 in Kentucky) is a retired American Thoroughbred racehorse who won on both dirt and turf. A descendant of Nearco through both his sire and his dam, he won the 1991 Kelso Handicap at New York's Belmont Park then with Pat Day riding and with a big late run from off the pace finished a fast-closing narrowly beaten third in the Breeders' Cup Mile behind Opening Verse. In 1992 his owners, Clover Racing Stables, sent him to trainer François Boutin to race in France and England. Lure (horse)
Lure (May 14, 1989 – November 15, 2017) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse who was best known for winning back to back Breeders' Cup Miles in 1992 and 1993. He began his career racing on dirt, and won the Gotham Stakes while on the Triple Crown trail. After losing his next two races though, his trainer decided to try him on the turf. After the switch, Lure won nine stakes races, three of them Grade I, and retired with earnings of over $2.5 million. He was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in 2013. Background Lure was a bay horse who was bred in Kentucky by a partnership of Claiborne Farm and William Haggin Perry's Gamely Corporation.
