United Nations Security Council Resolution 351, adopted on June 10, 1974, after examining the application of the People's Republic of Bangladesh for membership in the United Nations, the Council recommended to the General Assembly that the People's Republic of Bangladesh be admitted. The resolution was adopted without vote. Bangladesh (}, ), officially the People's Republic of Bangladesh, is a country in South Asia. The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA or GA; french: link=no, Assemblée générale, AG) is one of the six principal organs of the United Nations (UN), serving as the main deliberative, policymaking, and representative organ of the UN. Currently in its 77th session, its powers, composition, functions, and procedures are set out in Chapter IV of the United Nations Charter. The UNGA is responsible for the UN budget, appointing the non-permanent members to the Security Council, appointing the UN secretary-general, receiving reports from other parts of the UN system, and making recommendations through resolutions. The year 1974 was the third year after the independence of Bangladesh. It was also the third year of the first post-independence government in Bangladesh. The year saw a period of mass starvation beginning in March 1974 and ending in about December of the same year. The famine, allegedly causing death of a million people, is considered the worst in recent decades.
