United Nations Security Council Resolution 1984
United Nations Security Council Resolution 1984, adopted on June 9, 2011, after recalling resolutions 1696 (2006), 1737 (2006), 1747 (2007), 1803 (2008), 1835 (2008), 1887 (2009) and 1929 (2010) concerning Iran and non-proliferation, the Council extended the mandate of an expert panel monitoring sanctions against the country over its nuclear program for a period of one year. The resolution, proposed by France, Germany, the United Kingdom and United States, was adopted by a vote of 14 in favour, none against and one abstention from Lebanon. Resolution Observations In the preamble of Resolution 1984, the Security Council noted the importance of credible and objective assessments, analysis and recommendations in the reports of the expert panel. Atomic Energy Organisation Of Iran
The Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) is the main Iranian government agency responsible for operating nuclear power, nuclear energy and nuclear fuel cycle installations in Iran. AEOI is the primary organization responsible for nuclear technology research and development activities in Iran. AEOI was involved in formerly undeclared nuclear activities including enrichment facilities at Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant, Fordow and Natanz. Abstention
Abstention is a term in election procedure for when a participant in a vote either does not go to vote (on election day) or, in parliamentary procedure, is present during the vote, but does not cast a ballot. Abstention must be contrasted with "blank vote", in which a voter casts a ballot willfully made invalid by marking it wrongly or by not marking anything at all. A "blank (or white) voter" has voted, although their vote may be considered a spoilt vote, depending on each legislation, while an abstaining voter has not voted. Sanctions Against Iran
There have been a number of sanctions against Iran imposed by a number of countries, especially the United States, and international entities. Iran was the most sanctioned country in the world until it was surpassed by Russia following its invasion of neighboring Ukraine in February 2022. The first sanctions were imposed by the United States in November 1979 after a group of radical students seized the American Embassy in Tehran and took hostages. These sanctions were lifted in January 1981 after the hostages were released, but they were reimposed by the United States in 1987 in response to Iran's actions from 1981 to 1987 against the U.S. and vessels of other countries in the Persian Gulf and support for terrorism. Nuclear Facilities In Iran
Iran's nuclear program is made up of a number of nuclear facilities, including nuclear reactors and various nuclear fuel cycle facilities. Anarak Anarak, near Yazd, has a nuclear waste storage site. Arak The Arak area has several industrial complexes, some with ties to the nuclear program, in particular the IR-40 reactor under construction and a heavy water production plant, both near Arak.
