United Nations Security Council Resolution 1023
United Nations Security Council resolution 1023, adopted unanimously on 22 November 1995, after recalling all resolutions on the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, the Council noted the "Basic Agreement on the Region of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium" between the Government of Croatia and local Serb representatives. The Security Council again stressed the need for a negotiated political solution to the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia, including the mutual recognition of states in the territory. It also noted that Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Sirmium (known as Sector East) are integral parts of Croatia. Importance was attached to respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms in those areas. Eastern Slavonia, Baranja And Western Syrmia (1995–1998)
Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia ( sr, Источна Славонија, Барања и Западни Срем, Istočna Slavonija, Baranja i Zapadni Srem; hr, Istočna Slavonija, Baranja i Zapadni Srijem), commonly abbreviated as Eastern Slavonia ( sr, Источна Славонија, Istočna Slavonija; hr, Istočna Slavonija), was a short-lived Serb parallel entity in the territory of Croatia along the Danube river. The entity encompassed the same territory as the SAO Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia (formed in 1991), and which as an exclave had been merged into the self-proclaimed Republic of Serbian Krajina. Croatian War Of Independence
The Croatian War of Independence was fought from 1991 to 1995 between Croat forces loyal to the Government of Croatia—which had declared independence from the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY)—and the Serb-controlled Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) and local Serb forces, with the JNA ending its combat operations in Croatia by 1992. Yugoslav Wars
The Yugoslav Wars were a series of separate but related#Naimark, Naimark (2003), p. xvii. ethnic conflicts, wars of independence, and Insurgency, insurgencies that took place in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, SFR Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001. The conflicts both led up to and resulted from the breakup of Yugoslavia, which began in mid-1991, into six independent countries matching the six entities known as republics which previously composed Yugoslavia: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia, and North Macedonia (previously named ''Macedonia''). Yugoslavia's constituent republics declared independence due to unresolved tensions between ethnic minorities in the new countries, which fuelled the wars. SAO Eastern Slavonia, Baranja And Western Syrmia
The Serbian Autonomous Oblast of Eastern Slavonia, Baranja and Western Syrmia ( sh-Latn-Cyrl, Srpska autonomna oblast Istočna Slavonija, Baranja i Zapadni Srem, Српска аутономна област Источна Славонија, Барања и Западни Срем) was a self-proclaimed Serbian Autonomous Oblast (SAO) in eastern Croatia, established during the Yugoslav Wars. It was one of three SAOs proclaimed on the territory of Croatia. The oblast included parts of the geographical regions of Slavonia, Baranja, and Syrmia along the Croatian section of the Danube river Podunavlje region. Breakup Of Yugoslavia
The breakup of Yugoslavia occurred as a result of a series of political upheavals and conflicts during the early 1990s. After a period of political and economic crisis in the 1980s, constituent republics of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia split apart, but the unresolved issues caused bitter inter-ethnic Yugoslav wars. The wars primarily affected Bosnia and Herzegovina, neighbouring parts of Croatia and, some years later, Kosovo. After the Allied victory in World War II, Yugoslavia was set up as a federation of six republics, with borders drawn along ethnic and historical lines: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, and Slovenia.
