The Jewish Board of Family and Children’s Services (the Jewish Board) is one of the United States' largest nonprofit mental health and social service agencies, and New York State's largest social services nonprofit. Its services are non-sectarian, and nearly half of its clients are not Jewish. It has over 3,300 employees and 2,200 volunteers serving over 43,000 New Yorkers annually at its community-based programs, residential facilities, and day-treatment centers in each of the five boroughs of New York City as well as in Westchester County and Long Island. Jeffrey Brenner
Jeffrey Brenner is the CEO of the Jewish Board of Family and Children's Services, and a primary care physician. Biography Brenner is the founder of the Camden Coalition of Healthcare Providers, and was its executive director from 2006 to 2017. The Camden Coalition provides preventive care to high-risk patients in order to reduce healthcare costs. This practice is known as "hotspotting". The program, which began in Camden, New Jersey, has since expanded to ten cities, including Allentown, Pennsylvania, Aurora, Colorado, Kansas City, Missouri, and San Diego. Brenner won a MacArthur Award in 2013. He left his role as executive director of the Camden Coalition in 2017 to join UnitedHealthcare as Senior Vice President of Integrated Health and Social Services. Charity Organization Society
The Charity Organisation Societies were founded in England in 1869 following the ' Goschen Minute' that sought to severely restrict outdoor relief distributed by the Poor Law Guardians. In the early 1870s a handful of local societies were formed with the intention of restricting the distribution of outdoor relief to the elderly. Also called the Associated Charities was a private charity that existed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a clearing house for information on the poor. The society was mainly concerned with distinction between the deserving poor and undeserving poor. The society believed that giving out charity without investigating the problems behind poverty created a class of citizens that would always be dependent on alms giving. Josephine Shaw Lowell
Josephine Shaw Lowell (December 16, 1843 – October 12, 1905) was a Progressive Reform leader in the United States in the Nineteenth century. She is best known for creating the New York Consumers League in 1890. Seth Low's biographer described her as the "grand dame of the social reformers". Biography Early years Josephine Shaw was born in the West Roxbury section of Roxbury, Massachusetts into a wealthy New England family in 1843. Her parents, Francis George and Sarah Blake (Sturgis) Shaw, were Unitarian philanthropists and intellectuals who encouraged their five children to study, learn and become involved in their communities. Samuel Myer Isaacs
Samuel Myer Isaacs (January 4, 1804 - May 19, 1878) was a Dutch-born American educator, philanthropist and rabbi. He was the second Jewish spiritual leader in the United States to teach in English instead of Hebrew or German. Early life and education Rabbi Isaacs, born in Leeuwarden, was raised and educated in Great Britain. His service as Principal of the Neveh Zedek orphan asylum in London brought him to the attention of B'nai Jeshurun in New York, and in spite of his lack of rabbinical credentials, they requested him to lead their congregation. Isaacs's children were lawyer and judge Myer S. Isaacs and Rabbi Abram S. Isaacs. Career Rabbi Isaacs arrived in New York City in 1839.
