The Union of Mauritanian Workers (UTM) is a national trade union center in Mauritania. It was formed in 1961, and was the sole trade union center until the 1990s when political reforms led to the creation of two other centers, the CLTM and the CGTM. The UTM is traditionally seen as closely linked to the ruling Democratic and Social Republican Party (PRDS). Democratic And Social Republican Party
The Democratic Republican Party for Renewal (french: Parti Républicain Démocratique pour le Renouvellement - PRDR) is a political party in Mauritania. Formerly known as the Democratic and Social Republican Party, (french: Parti Républicain Démocratique et Social, PRDS) the party changed its identity and adjusted its political stance after the 2005 coup. Formerly very supportive of President Maaouya Ould Sid'Ahmed Taya and his pro-Israeli policy, after the 2005 coup the party denounced Taya's policies and the mid-2006 Israeli military campaign in Lebanon. Trade Unions In Mauritania
Human rights in Mauritania is generally seen as poor according to international observers, including Freedom House, the United States Department of State, and Amnesty International. With a July 2012 estimated population of 3.4 million, Mauritania is a highly centralized Islamic republic with no legal provisions for freedom of religion. Coming from French colonial rule, Mauritania was ethnically divided between Arabic speaking tribal confederations of the north and sedentary black populations of the south, many of whom were traditionally bonded communities or enslaved individuals. The Mauritanian government has a history of discriminating against these Toucouleurs and Soninke people within its borders. One such example occurred in 1987, when the government imprisoned southerners and threw others out of the army, resulting in the Mauritania–Senegal Border War.
