Union Riga
Union Riga was a football club established in Riga in 1907. It was the winner of the Riga football league in 1910. In the period of independence of Latvia between the World wars Union played in the Latvian Higher League for several years. Being essentially a sports club of Baltic Germans, Union was disestablished in 1939 with the repatriation of Baltic Germans. History The Riga cycling club Union was founded in 1893. A football section of the club was opened in 1907 – shortly after British FC Riga, thus Union was the second football club to be formed on the territory of Latvia. In the first years of its existence there was a tense rivalry between Union and BFC – the former being a mostly German side and the latter – a club for which played entirely Britons. Vladimirs Bērziņš
Vladimirs Bērziņš (born 16 December 1905, date of death unknown) was a Latvian football midfielder and manager, one of the most capped footballers in pre-war Latvia. Biography Bērziņš began playing football with the mostly German sports club Union Riga in 1925. He was selected to play for the Latvia national football team for 26 August 1925 friendly match against Estonia, but later he was removed from the list of selected players. At the end of the 1926 football season Bērziņš left Union for the three-time champion of Latvia RFK. For this side he played for the rest of his football career. With RFK he won the Latvian Higher League title four times – in 1930, 1931, 1934 and 1935. In the second half of the 1930s Bērziņš played very little with RFK and retired from playing in 1939. Alfrēds Verners
Alfrēds Verners (1912 – 31 December 1973) was a Latvian footballer and ice hockey player who played ten matches for Latvia national football team in the 1920s. Biography Verners began playing both football and ice hockey with Union Riga (as it was a common practice among sportspeople in Latvia before World War II to compete in different sports in summer and winter). Verners got a wider popularity as in 1930 Union returned to the Latvian Higher League and unexpectedly earned a respectable fourth-place finish, and won the bronze medals just a year later. In ice hockey Union was an even stronger side, winning the first two Latvian league tournaments, thus by 1933 Verners was a two-time champion of Latvia in ice hockey and a one time bronze medallist in football.
