Union Of Baptist Churches In Serbia
The Union of Baptist Churches in Serbia is a fellowship of Baptist churches, one of two Baptist groups in Serbia. First known Baptist work in the area began in 1875 with Heinrich Meyer baptizing four Germans in Novi Sad. Work began among the Hungarians in 1899, Slovaks in 1900, Romanians in 1922, and Serbs in 1925. The German Baptists formed an association that continued to 1944. After Yugoslavia was formed in 1918, Baptists formed a union in 1924. The union ended during World War II, but was reorganized after the war. This union ceased to exist in 1991, and the Baptist Union of Serbia was founded March 21, 1992, then changed its name to ''Baptist Union of Yugoslavia'', but has since been returned to the current name. The Union is a member of the European Baptist Federation and the Baptist World Alliance. In 1998, the Union was made up of 51 congregations composed on 1619 members. Heinrich Meyer
Heinrich August Wilhelm Meyer (10 January 1800 – 21 June 1873) was a German Protestant divine. He wrote commentaries on the ''New Testament'' and published an edition of that book. Biography Meyer was born in Gotha. He studied theology at Jena, was pastor at Harste, Hoya, also serving as superintendent there, and at Neustadt am Rübenberge, and eventually became a member of the Hanover Consistory of the Church of Hanover and superintendent at Hanover in 1841. He is chiefly noted for his valuable ''Kritischexegetischer Kommentar zum Neuen Testament'' (16 vols.), which began to appear in 1832, was completed in 1859 with the assistance of Johann Eduard Huther, Friedrich Düsterdieck and Gottlieb Lünemann, and has been translated into English. The European Baptist Federation (EBF) is a federation of 59 Baptist associations and is one of six regional fellowships in the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Amsterdam, Netherlands. History The EBF was founded in Ruschlikon, Switzerland, in 1949. The Baptist World Alliance (BWA) is the largest international Baptist organization with an estimated 51 million people in 2022 with 246 member bodies in 128 countries and territories. A voluntary association of Baptist churches, the BWA accounts for about half the Baptists in the world. It is the 8th largest Christian communion. The Union of Christian Baptist Churches in Romania ( ro, Uniunea Bisericilor Creștin Baptiste din România) is a Baptist Christian denomination in Romania. It is affiliated with the Romanian Evangelical Alliance and the Baptist World Alliance. The headquarters is in Bucharest. History Origins The first modern-era Baptists in Romania were of German extraction. Karl Scharschmidt came to what is now southern Romania from Hungary in 1856 and settled in Bucharest. Protestantism In Serbia
Protestants are the 4th largest religious group in Serbia, after Eastern Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics and Muslims. In the 2011 census, there were 71,284 Protestants in Serbia (excluding the territory of Kosovo) and they comprised 1% of the population of the country. Ethnic Slovaks constitute majority of Serbia's Protestant community. Some members of other ethnic groups (especially Serbs in absolute terms and Hungarians and Germans in proportional terms) are also adherents of various forms of Protestant Christianity.
