British High Commission, Ottawa
The British High Commission in Ottawa, Ontario, is the main diplomatic mission of the United Kingdom in Canada. It is located at 80 Elgin Street in downtown Ottawa, across the street from the National Arts Centre and not far from Parliament Hill. History The current building was opened in 1964 and designed by Eric Bedford. Previously the site had been home to the Union Hotel, founded in the 1850s but demolished in 1962. The High Commissioner's position was created in 1928 after the Balfour Declaration of 1926 and was the first such posting for Britain. The present High Commissioner is Susannah Goshko. The UK has Consulates-General in Toronto, Montreal, Calgary, and Vancouver. It has Honorary Consuls in St. John's, Halifax, Quebec City, and Winnipeg. The Union Hotel, La Porte, California
The Union Hotel was established by the Murray family in La Porte, California in 1855. Originally known as the Kitts Union Hotel, it was renamed in 1860 in honor of local Union soldiers. The original structure was destroyed by fire, and rebuilt in 1906. The only surviving structural element is the brick safe which stands at the center of the hotel. Wheeling is a village in Cook County, Illinois, Cook and Lake County, Illinois, Lake counties in the U.S. state of Illinois. The Union Hotel is a historic hotel building at 926 Cundy's Harbor Road in the Cundy's Harbor village of Harpswell, Maine. Built in 1862, it is believed to be the oldest purpose-built summer resort hotel in the state. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. It now houses the Captain's Watch Bed and Breakfast. Description and history The Union Hotel building stands atop a rise in the village of Cundy's Harbor, located near the southeastern tip of Sebascodegan Island, which forms the eastern part of the town of Harpswell. The building, which looks like a large house, stands on the west side of Cundy's Harbor Road, just north of the village library. It is a two-story wood frame structure, with a hip roof and clapboard siding. The roof is topped at its center by an octagonal cupola. Union Hotel (Meridian, Mississippi)
The numerous historic hotels in Meridian, Mississippi, provide insights into the city's growth and expansion, both in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and into the modern age. Many hotels were built in downtown Meridian in the early 1900s to provide lodging for passengers of the railroad, which was essential to the city's growth at the turn of the 20th century. Two of these historic hotels–the Union Hotel, built in 1910, and the Lamar Hotel, built in 1927–have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Others, including the E.F. The Union Hotel is a historic hotel building at 254 Main Street in the Union village of Wakefield, New Hampshire. Built in 1855 and repeatedly enlarged, it is one of only two surviving 19th-century railroad hotels in the town. It was operated until 1960, and for many years housed the local VFW post. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. It is now home to the Greater Wakefield Resource Center. Description and history The Union Hotel is located in southernmost Wakefield, in the village of Union at the northwest corner of Main and Church streets. The Union Hotel is a historic landmark located on Main Street in Flemington, New Jersey. It is a contributing property to the Flemington Historic District. First constructed by Neal Hart in 1814, it served as a gathering place for well-to-do stagecoach passengers and socialites throughout the 19th Century, as well as many local characters and tourists visiting the area. The exterior of the present building dates to 1878. It gained national notoriety in the early months of 1935 when the trial of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnapping of Charles A. Lindbergh, Jr. was conducted directly across the street at the Hunterdon County Courthouse and members of the national media covering the trial all stayed at the hotel. Union Hotel, also known as Barrow's Hotel, is a historic hotel located at Sackets Harbor in Jefferson County, New York. It is a -story stone building, 51 feet by 69 feet, over a full basement. The original structure was built in 1817–1818. The interior features distinctive Federal woodwork. It functioned as a hotel into the 1860s, then was used as a Masonic Lodge. The Union Hotel, also known as the Shepherdstown Hotel or Hilltop Inn, is an historic, American hotel that is located in Shepherdstown in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989. The Bella Union Hotel in Los Angeles, California, constructed in 1835, is California Historical Landmark No. 656. It was effectively the last capitol building of Mexican California under Governor Pio Pico, in 1845–47, and was a center of social and political life for decades. The hotel was located at N. Main Street, on the east side, a few doors north of Commercial Street, which then ran east–west between Arcadia and Temple. The hotel was later known as the Clarendon and then as the St. Charles. History The building was thought to exist very close to the original site of Yaanga, a prominent Tongva (or Kizh) village.
