Union Cemetery (Redwood City, California)
Union Cemetery is a historic cemetery on Woodside Road (California State Route 84, CA 84) near El Camino Real (California), El Camino Real in Redwood City, California, Redwood City, San Mateo County, California. The cemetery was named a California Historical Landmark #816 in 1967, then added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. History Founded in 1859, this is the site of the first American burial ground in San Mateo County, and was originally located just outside the town limits of Redwood City. The cemetery officially closed in 1918, but it was used for many years after that for burial of the poor. Searsville, California
Searsville (c.1854–1891) was a San Mateo County, California town located in what is now the Jasper Ridge Biological Preserve on Corte Madera Creek and adjacent to Woodside. At Northwest Corner Sandhill Road and Portola Road is a plaque and this location is a California Historical Landmark, since 1950. History Charles Brown, a former whaler from San Francisco purchased a portion of the Rancho Cañada de Raymundo Mexican-era land grant of John Coppinger and settled there with his wife. The newly acquired property was named the Mountain Home Ranch and previously had an adobe house built in 1839 (still located at the intersection of present day Portola Road and La Honda Road) and a sawmill. San Mateo County History Museum
The San Mateo County History Museum is located in downtown Redwood City, California. Housed inside the former San Mateo County Courthouse built in 1910, the museum showcases the rich history of San Mateo County, California, San Mateo County and the surrounding area. Operations and funding for the museum are by the San Mateo County Historical Association (SMCHA). The current location of this museum opened on February 6, 1999, however from 1963 until 1998 the museum was located at the College of San Mateo. The Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) was a fraternal organization composed of veterans of the Union Army (United States Army), Union Navy (U.S. Navy), and the Marines who served in the American Civil War. Sarah Wallis
Sarah Wallis, also known as Sarah Armstrong Montgomery Green Wallis (1825–1905) was an early Anglophone settler in California and first President of the California Woman Suffrage Educational Association. Early life She was born Sarah Armstrong in southern Ohio in 1825. Her family later settled in Missouri in 1839 where her father died in 1842. She became a hired girl for John B. Townsend. She married Allen Montgomery and joined the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy Party which traveled to California over what was to become known as Donner Pass in 1844.
