Union Bank Of Australia
The Union Bank of Australia was an Australian bank in operation from 1837 to 1951. It was established in London in October 1837 with a subscribed capital of £500,000. The foundation of the bank had followed a visit to England by Van Diemen's Land banker Philip Oakden with a view to forming a large joint stock bank operating across the Australasian colonies, during which time he gained the support of businessman and banker George Fife Angas who had founded the South Australian Company. The new bank absorbed Oakden's struggling Launceston-based Tamar Bank upon his return, and opened its first branch in the former Tamar Bank premises on 1 May 1838. It expanded into Victoria on 18 October 1838, when it acquired the Melbourne business of the Tasmanian Derwent Bank, which had been the first bank in the city. The Riverine Grazier
''The Riverine Grazier'' is an English language newspaper published in Hay, New South Wales from 1873. The paper absorbed the ''Riverina Times, Hay Standard and Journal of Water Conservation'' in October 1902. History The first issue of ''The Riverine Grazier'' was on 29 October 1873. The paper was published every Wednesday and could be subscribed to for £1 per year. It contained agricultural information, news and advertisements for goods and services in the area. Its founder was John Andrew; it was purchased in 1888 by James Ashton M.L.C. (previously a compositor with the ''Hay Standard'' then a clerk with Cramsie, Bowden and Co.) and John Johnston O.B.E. (ca.1864 – 29 October 1939) who was previously an accountant with Cobb and Co. then branch manager for the Equitable Assurance Company, of New Zealand. The former Union Bank of Australia Building, also known as the ANZ Bank Building, is a heritage listed building located at 86 High Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. It was one of many commercial buildings constructed in Fremantle during the interwar period. The two storey building was constructed in 1930 The site was formerly known as 84 High Street and was the address of four shops that occupied the site prior to 1930. The building was designed by Hobbs, Smith and Forbes and built for the Union Bank of Australia by the builder R. V. Ritchie. Constructed in the Inter-War Free Classical style the building was made from rendered brick with an ashlar effect and has a breakfront where the centre of the building is recessed. Union Bank, Fremantle
The site of 4 High Street was purchased by the Union Bank of Australia in 1881 and for several years the bank operated from the existing building, which had been the residence of Captain Daniel Scott. A new building was erected in 1889 with plans prepared by Melbourne architect William Edward Robertson, the construction was supervised by James Wright. The bank built new premises further along High Street in 1930 and placed the existing building up for auction. It was advertised as having a frontage along High Street and a frontage along Cliff Street. The ground floor of the brick building had a large banking chamber, a manager's office, strongroom, entrance hall, dining room and kitchen. The first floor contained a drawing room, seven bedrooms, bathrooms and linen closet. There were balconies at both the front and rear of the building. Albany House
Albany House is a heritage listed building located on the corner of Stirling Terrace and York Street overlooking Princess Royal Harbour in Albany in the Great Southern region of Western Australia. The building was originally constructed as the Union Bank of Australia building, and completed in 1884. The banking chamber occupied the ground floor while the manager's residence took up the first floor. The two storey building was built in the Victorian Regency style; it is constructed from load-bearing masonry that has been rendered and painted. A rendered plinth at the base of the building is continuous around the main facade and is deepest at the truncated corner as the site slopes to the south. A single storey wing extends from the western side to the boundary with the London Hotel. The Union Bank of Australia building is a heritage-listed former school and bank building and now offices and restaurant at 84 Byng Street, Orange, City of Orange, New South Wales, Australia. The Bank of Australasia was an Australian bank in operation from 1835 to 1951. Headquartered in London, the bank was incorporated by Royal Charter in March 1834. It had initially been planned to additionally include first South Africa and then Ceylon in the bank's operations; however, both these moves were blocked by the Lords of the Treasury. Its first branch opened in Sydney on 14 December 1835, followed by branches in Hobart and Launceston on 1 January 1836, in the latter city by taking over the former Cornwall Bank. A Melbourne branch opened on 28 August 1838 and an Adelaide branch on 14 January 1839. It opened a Perth branch in May 1841 when it absorbed the original Bank of Western Australia; however, the branch was closed in 1844 and the bank would not reopen in that city until 1894. Brownhill and continues to this day. The ''Advocate'' incorporated the ''Forbes Times'' on 31 March 1920.
