Unicorn Stakes
The Unicorn Stakes (Japanese ユニコーンステークス) is a Grade 3 horse race for three-year-old Thoroughbreds run in June over a distance of 1600 metres on dirt at Tokyo Racecourse. The race was first run in 1996 and has held Grade 3 status ever since. The race was run over 1800 metres at Nakayama Racecourse in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000. Past winners of the race have included Taiki Shuttle, Agnes Digital and Kane Hekili. Tokyo Racecourse
is located in Fuchu, Tokyo, Japan. Built in 1933 for horse racing, it is considered the "racecourse of racecourses" in Japanese horseracing. It has a capacity of 223,000, with seating for 13,750. Tokyo Racecourse hosts numerous G1 (Grade 1) races, including the Japan Cup, Tokyo Yushun (the Japanese Derby) and the Yasuda Kinen, a part of the Asian Mile Challenge. Physical attributes Tokyo Race Course's grass course measures 2083m (1¼ miles + 234 feet) with two chutes (1800m and 2000m). Races can be run on the "A Course" rail setting (on the hedge), the "B Course" setting (rail out 3 meters), the "C Course" setting (rail out 6 meters), the "D Course" setting (rail out 9 meters) or the "E Course" setting (rail out 12 meters). Damian Lane
Damian Lane (born 6 February 1994) is an Australian jockey based in Victoria. Lane was born in Bunbury in Western Australia to Michael Lane, a horse trainer, and Vickey Lane, who was also a horse trainer. He grew up around horses because of his upbringing, and began his career in Western Australia in 2009, and later moved to Victoria. His first Group One winner was Trust In A Gust in the 2014 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield. As of mid-April 2023, he has ridden 1,335 winners, including 26 in Group One races. Lane spent three months in Japan from April to July 2019, riding 37 winners, including his first Japanese Grade 1 victory at the Victoria Mile with Normcore, and spent another three months there between April and July 2020, riding 41 winners. Cafe Pharoah
Cafe Pharoah ( ja, カフェファラオ, link=no foaled 3 March 2017) is an American-bred, Japanese-trained Thoroughbred racehorse. As a two-year-old in 2019, he established himself as a top-class dirt performer in the following year, winning the Hyacinth Stakes, Unicorn Stakes and Sirius Stakes. In 2021 he won the February Stakes. Background Cafe Pharoah is a bay colt with a small white star bred in Kentucky by Paul P Pompa. In March 2019, after failing to find a buyer at Keeneland as a yearling, he was consigned to the Ocala Breeders' Sales Company Sale of Two-Year-Olds in Training and was bought for $475,000 by the bloodstock agency Narvick International. The colt was exported to Japan and entered training with Noriyuki Hori. He carries the yellow and black racing colours of Koichi Nishikawa. 2020 Road To The Kentucky Derby
The 2020 Road to the Kentucky Derby was a series of races through which horses qualified for the 2020 Kentucky Derby, which was held on September 5 (rescheduled from the traditional first Saturday in May due to the COVID-19 pandemic, coronavirus pandemic). The field for the Derby is limited to 20 horses, with up to four 'also eligibles' in case of a late withdrawal from the field. There are three separate paths for horses to take to qualify for the Derby: the main Road consisting of races in North America (plus one in Dubai), the Japan Road consisting of four races in Japan, and the European Road with seven European races in England, Ireland and France. The top four finishers in the specified races receive points, with higher points awarded in the major prep races. Earnings in non-restricted stakes races act as a tie breaker.
