Underwhelmed
"Underwhelmed" is the debut single by Canadian alternative rock band Sloan. The song was originally released on the DTK Records compilation ''Hear and Now '92: The Best Of The East Coast's Independent'' in 1992 and was later included on the band's debut EP, ''Peppermint''. A music video was released of the ''Peppermint'' version. The song was re-recorded for the band's debut full-length album, ''Smeared'', and was released as the album's lead single. The song is the band's best-charted single outside Canada, peaking at #25 on the Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1993. Legacy In 1996, 2000, and 2005, the music magazine ''Chart'' conducted reader polls to determine the best Canadian songs of all time, in which Underwhelmed was voted the second greatest Canadian song of all time. Sloan is a Canadian rock music, rock band based in Toronto and originally from Halifax Regional Municipality, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Sloan have released thirteen full-length albums and have received nine Juno Award nominations, winning one. Between 1996 and 2016, Sloan was among the top 75 best-selling Canadian artists in Canada and among the top 25 best-selling Canadian bands in Canada. While the web version appears to be available online, the domain is now used as a popular media outlet, similar to BuzzFeed, almost entirely excluding music. ''Peppermint EP'' is the debut EP released by Canadian rock band Sloan. It was released on their own label, Murderecords, in 1992. The EP was recorded at Sound Market Studios in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada by Terry Pulliam, who also engineered the recording. Three songs – "Marcus Said", "Underwhelmed", and "Sugartune" – were also included on the band's first full-length album, ''Smeared''; "Underwhelmed" was entirely re-recorded, while "Marcus Said" and "Sugartune" were remixed versions of the original ''Peppermint'' recordings. Jennifer Pierce of Jale provides additional backing vocals on two songs, "Marcus Said" and "Torn". The cover is a photo of Jason Larsen, a friend of the band's, after whom the band is named. ''Smeared'' is the debut studio album by Canadian rock band Sloan. It was released in Canada on October 1, 1992, and in the United States in January, 1993, on Geffen Records. The album was recorded at a low cost of $1,200. The album is ranked 86th in the 2007 book ''The Top 100 Canadian Albums'' by music journalist Bob Mersereau and is widely considered a seminal album of Canada's 1990s alternative rock scene. In an interview with GuitarWorld, in December 2022, Patrick Pentland stated that a Smeared 30th Anniversary reissue is in the works, slated for 2023. Chris Murphy (Canadian Musician)
Chris Murphy (born November 7, 1968) is a member of the Canadian rock band Sloan. Early life Murphy was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. His family later moved to Charlottesville, Virginia, where his father obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. He later moved to Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he attended Halifax West High School and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Musical career Murphy originally formed Sloan with Jay Ferguson. Murphy is the band's primary bassist, occasionally switching to drums or guitar, and is one of the band's two main singers; he sings lead on about 40 percent of the band's songs and backup harmony vocals on most of the others.
