Underpass Park
Underpass Park is a public space designed by PFS Studio and The Planning Partnership located beneath the overpasses of Adelaide Street, Eastern Avenue, and Richmond Street in the West Don Lands neighbourhood of Toronto. The first phase of the development features a playground, basketball courts, and skate park, and was officially opened by Toronto Mayor Rob Ford on August 2, 2012. The park is an initiative of Waterfront Toronto, and is the 18th public space that the group has built or revitalized since 2005 in the Toronto waterfront district. The initial phase of Underpass Park cost approximately $6 million, paid for mostly by Government of Canada. A second phase, cost $3.5 million, opened in the spring of 2013. Among the artists featured are an Indigenous street mural by Chief Lady Bird, Aura, and Christopher Ross among others. Toronto Parks, Forestry And Recreation Division
Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation (PFR) is the division of Toronto's municipal government responsible for maintaining the municipal park system and natural spaces, regulation of and provision of urban forestry services, and the delivery of recreational programming in city-operated facilities. With a gross annual budget in 2020 of C$459.4 million, the division operates 1473 named parks, 839 sports fields, 137 community centres, and about 670 other recreational facilities. The division is also responsible for the city's over 3 million trees. Toronto Waterfront
The Toronto waterfront is the lakeshore of Lake Ontario in the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It spans 46 kilometres between the mouth of Etobicoke Creek in the west and the Rouge River in the east. History Lake Ontario is a recent lake. As the last glaciation, the Laurentian glaciation receded, a number of proglacial lakes filled in basins adjacent to the glacier. One of those proglacial lakes was Lake Iroquois. Lake Iroquois was considerably deeper than Lake Ontario, as a lobe of the Laurentian glacier still filled the valley of what is now the St. Lawrence River. The southern boundary of Lake Iroquois was the Niagara escarpment. The lake flowed over the Niagara Escarpment east of Rochester, and flowed to the Atlantic Ocean down what is now the Mohawk River, to the Hudson River. Kwun Tong Promenade
Kwun Tong Promenade is an urban waterfront park in Kwun Tong, New Kowloon, Hong Kong. The first and second stages of the promenade, opened in 2010 and 2015 respectively, comprise the first open space project of the Kai Tak Development. The promenade is about one kilometre in length. It overlooks the Kwun Tong Typhoon Shelter and sits beneath the Kwun Tong Bypass. History The site of the promenade was formerly occupied by the Kwun Tong Public Cargo Working Area, which was home to many waste paper recycling businesses. The cargo area was reduced in size in 2009 to make way for the first phase of the promenade, a 200-metre long section near the ferry piers. This section opened to the public on 16 January 2010. The existing Hoi Bun Road Sitting-out Area, south of the Kwun Tong Promenade, was built by the Urban Council in 1982. Chief Lady Bird
Chief Lady Bird (also known as Nancy King) is a Chippewa and Potawatomi artist, illustrator, educator and community activist from Rama First Nation and Moosedeer Point First Nation, who currently resides in Toronto, Ontario. Chief Lady Bird (Ogimaakwebnes) is her spirit name, which she uses professionally as an artist. Her art is focused on foregrounding the experiences of Indigenous women. Waterfront Toronto (incorporated as the Toronto Waterfront Revitalization Corporation) is an organization that oversees revitalization projects along the Toronto waterfront.
