Under The Lash
''Under the Lash'' is a 1921 American silent drama film directed by Sam Wood and starring Gloria Swanson. The film is based on the 1906 play '' The Shulamite'' by Claude Askew and Edward Knoblock, and the 1904 novel of the same name by Alice and Claude Askew. The film is lost with no copies of it existing in any archives. Plot As described in a film magazine, Deborah (Swanson), the second wife of intolerant and bigoted Boer farmer Simeon Krillet (Simpson), first learns of kindness from the Englishman Robert Waring (Hamilton) who comes to study farming from her husband. When her husband threatens to beat her for reading one of the Englishman's books Deborah tells him, to save him from the young man's wrath, that she is to become a mother. He desists and his cruelty turns to kindness. The disclosure of her fabrication brings renewal of his wrath and a determination to kill her. Sam Wood
Samuel Grosvenor Wood (July 10, 1883 – September 22, 1949) was an American film director and producer who is best known for having directed such Hollywood hits as '' A Night at the Opera'', '' A Day at the Races'', '' Goodbye, Mr. Chips'', ''The Pride of the Yankees'', and '' ''For Whom the Bell Tolls'''' and for his uncredited work directing parts of '' Gone with the Wind''. He was also involved in a few acting and writing projects. As a youth, Wood developed an enthusiasm for physical fitness that persisted into his senior years and influenced his interest in making sports-themed films. Wood advanced from making largely competent yet routine pictures in the 1920s and 1930s to directing several highly regarded works during the 1940s at the peak of his abilities, among them '' Kings Row'' (1942) and ''Ivy'' (1947). Russell Simpson (actor)
Russell McCaskill Simpson (June 17, 1880 – December 12, 1959) was an American character actor. Early life Russell Simpson was born on June 17, 1880 (other sources indicate 1877) in Danville, California. He attended grammar school in the Danville District in Contra Costa County, California; he graduated on July 2, 1892. At age 18, Simpson prospected for gold in Alaska. He began taking acting classes in Seattle, Washington. He was married to Gertrude Aller from New York City on January 19, 1910. Career By 1909, he had gone into the theatre. He appeared in at least two plays on Broadway between 1909 and 1912, and made his motion picture debut in Cecil B. DeMille's 1914 original film version of '' The Virginian'' in a bit part.
